Hrmm. I'm back from Virginia. Left Tuesday morning around 9 and got there around 6. The motel I booked was a friggin' pit, so I called like 30 places, but they were all full.
We got cleaned up and changed clothes and went to the funeral home. There were a lot of folks there. People who said, "oh my god! matthew hasn't changed a bit!" even though they hadn't seen me in like 25 (no shit, 25) years. I didn't recognize them, tho' Turned out later they are cousins, daughters of my mother's other sister. My dad was also there (prolly a good time to mention that my mom and her sister married my dad and his brother, so my aunt was my dad's brother's wife, and that's why he was there). He and my mom don't get along too well, so they pretty much just enjoyed opposite sides of the room (when the bell rings, come out swingin'...).
After the viewing, my mom and I went to Ruby Tuesday, since we hadn't had dinner. Then my dad, brother, nephew, and I went to a dive bar for a couple beers.
Wednesday was the funeral. My mom and I went to IHOP for breakfast (I had the Vive la French Toast), then headed to Leo The Great Catholic Church (I'm burninggggg!). The priest was my aunt's godson. It was pretty awesome as funerals go. I laughed. I cried.
The funeral procession was loooooong. There was barely enough parking space at the burial site. She's in a really beautiful spot under a big tree. So beautiful, in fact, that my cousin (her daughter) immediately went and bought herself a place.
My mom and I went and changed back to reg'lar clothes and am-scrayed from the roach motel. We went over to my uncle's and hung out for several hours with him, my brother and nephew, an aunt, and many cousins. We had some sammiches, shot the shit, and had the grand time that my aunt so would have wanted us to be having.
We left about 7:30 pm and got home about 4 am Thursday. I took Thursday off. I couldn't log into SG all friggin' day. Now, I'm gonna go get ready for work. There'll be more observations on the whole trip later.
Much love,
M@
