10/27: Tell us about your Halloween traditions!
Happy Halloween lovers!
Who else has been ridiculously excited over the past couple of months?! I know I have! When it reaches about July, I’m already dreaming of Halloween!
As a little kid, I’ve always adored Halloween. First it was the candy that won me over, then as I started to get older and more interested in special effects makeup I really started to notice the effort people put into their costumes!
For a long time, I didn’t know why people went trick-or-treating, or why Halloween was even a celebration in the first place? (I mean, here we are all celebrating a day where you dress small children up as scary demons that demand candy from their neighbors) So here is some background information for those of you wondering the same thing!
Thousands of years ago, the Celts (living in what is now the UK, Ireland and Northern France) used to celebrate a holiday known as ‘Samhain’ on the night of October 31. They believed that it was this time of the year (end of harvest) where the dead could return to earth. Some people would dress in costume, while others would leave out food and drink to keep the dead at bay.
Halloween finally reached America in the 1800s during The Great Famine, as America was flooded with Irish immigrants. By the early 20th century the festival became less about spiritual and religious meaning and more about community spirit!
My personal Halloween traditions include participating in some scary makeup and outfits, usually attending a party and hey – it also gives me an excuse to eat copious amounts of junk food and not feel too bad about it!
As I don’t have any younger siblings, I don’t participate in door knocking but I do like to watch a few of my favourite horror movies around Halloween! (cue house of 1000 corpses and the devils rejects by Rob Zombie!) and hopefully I’ll have the time to carve another pumpkin this year!
As I mentioned before, Halloween really sparked my interest as a form to express my special effects makeup! Photos below of my current and previous Halloween looks! (Makeup done by myself) – And my pumpkin from last year!
I hope you all have a super spoopy Halloween and remember to keep each other safe!
Thank you @missy and @rambo <3
Lots of love,
