I was driving home from town last night at around midnight and I saw this adorable fawn running down the center of the road with no older deer in sight. I followed him for awhile, hoping I could scare him off the road or at least for my own peace of mind know that he got wherever it was he was going.
He'd run down the yellow line, then turn around and look at me and start wobbley running again. When we got to the bottom of this hill I saw the headlights from another car coming. I totally didn't know what to do. This deer was right in the center of the road and the car was going at least 70 in a 45.
I flashed my lights at them repeatedly and saw the deer take off in the other direction. I looked out my window to see if he was okay and just as I did I heard the most horrific sound of the car's grill slamming into the fawn. It catapulted the poor thing down and off to the side of the road.
I couldn't fucking believe it. I was shocked. I fucking cried my eyes out for the next 20 minutes as I tried to no avail to catch the ass-clown who did it. Then I went home and hugged my cat for the rest of the night.
I've never witnessed anything so depressing in my entire life. I've never hit any animal. I've never seen anything die, except the spiders I squash on my bathroom floor. When I see dead deer, it's sad, but I never saw them alive. I was following this poor guy for a mile. He was so cute, and I bet he was so scared just by having me there. First he loses his mom and dad, then he gets squashed by some asshole who didn't brake or turn around to see what the hell it was that he hit.
to the cute deer yesterday. Somebody gave a shit about you.

Still, the case you wrote about really is sad; you gotta feel for the poor little guy. And I will say they are beautiful animals; I remember walking through a field behind my cousin's house one day and I stepped out into this pasture and there must have been a herd of 10 of them or so. They saw me and ran, and it was beautiful watching them; very graceful.
