We had our first combat death yesterday. By no means the first, or even the last, but the first from the 700 or so people who are closest to me. After almost 6 months, we had become accustomed to not getting killed.
We are not some kind of corporate war machine, some corrupt tool of the market-hungry government. I mean, I guess we are, but that is not why we joined. So many on this site I see just "hate George Bush". But so many I work with joined the military before he was elected. We are not the enemies of freedom.
"Why is it only called terrorism when it hurts the U.S?" that's bullshit. It's called terrorism when the victims are Israeli women and children just trying to ride the bus, and it's terrorism when it's Chechnyan "rebels" taking Russian citizens hostage in a theater in Moscow.
What we do here is not oppressive. We are rebuilding schools, and training a new army and police force here, planning soon to give this shithole back to them. If we left today, many more innocent people would still be hurt.
I just can't help thinking about the guy I used to work with. Last night I was thinking, lucky he wasn't married, that's at least one less life that will be torn apart by this loss. Then I started thinking, but damn I hope he had a chance to get good and laid before we all came over here to get screwed. I just don't know what would be best. I guess that would be some sort of fantasy world where this kind of thing is not necessary at all.
Like Hal Moore said (or Joe Galloway, who was there with him): it's not all about them and us, it's not about apple pie or the flag, or whatever. What it comes down to, we are all fighting for the man on our left and right. "Hate war, but love the American Warrior."
Without them, we'd all be speaking German right now, right?
