I love music. If I had to give up all my material possessions except two, one would be of course a shotgun (for protection against zombies of course) and the other my guitar. I could lose my books and I don't watch TV anyways, so no loss.
I love the direction my current band is going. I intentionally got a second guitarist who is NOT a Metalhead. I love Metal, don't get me wrong, and consider myself a Metalhead, but I didn't want to be predictable. He loves bands like Muse and Silversun Pickups.
For the record, I've seen Silversun Pickups live and they were fabulous. The singer/guitarist covered as much stage room as Angus Young does. He didn't necessarily do regular guitar solos, but a lot of instrumental work and his guitar work was very impressive. I liked the drummer a lot. That guy was back there thrashing around the whole show.
For today's Metal, I find most of it boring. The vast majority of Metal bands are predictable and safe. So they scream and growl and they're angry. Sometimes there is a female vocalist too so the dude goes "rah" and the chick goes "la." Wow. So unique. Not.
I like Opeth. I think they're absolutely brilliant. Boring they are not. Always pushing the envelope, always doing something completely different. I honestly think that in ANY form of popular music today, they are technically the best band out there. They're not my favorite, but it's nothing against them. I like simple hooks and simple grooves with lots of melody so that's why I like Nightwish so much (well, before they canned their operatic singer). Nightwish pours on the melody and adds a symphony and often even a chorus to back it up. That's what I like.
