This is a long story taken from an AIM discussion so sorry for the typos or anything of the sort
basically we were supposed to introduce ourselves to the class,
with this questionaire type thing:
name:
where from:
major:
philosophy classes taken:
what we want to do after school:
who our favorite philosopher is:
what our favorite philosophical writing is:
and give an example of something we know:
so I did my thing:
derek
santa cruz
advertising major
Ive taken logic
I plan on being a millionaire by the time im
25 and retiring at 35
my favorite philiosopher is "im not good with names" descartes comes to mind
my favorite writings are "im not much of a reader"
and for an example of something I know, I put "I dislike the taste of water"
but I didnt end up saying that for the class
because 2 guys ahead of me was this guy
he wore a blazer, had super big hilarious glasses,
and was combing his long flowing hair before class.
and when he went
he was all like my name is pat something something the 3rd
Im a philosophy major
my favorite philosopher is a tie between 4 guys someone someon someone and someone, and they are to be read in this order first third, second and fourth, and he was all like philosophy philosophy philosophy
and he taked super hillarious and like "uh blaw blaw blaw
all pompous and stuff
and so when I went
I changed my example of something I know, from not liking water,
to not liking that guy, and I pointed to him
and the teacher said who?
and I said that guy and pointed to him again
and shes all pat?
and im all yeah pat
and hes all this pat?
and I said yeah this pat
and then she said this is a joke right? you two know eachother?
and im like nope ive never seen him before in my life
and the class was like, you dont like pat? hes like the nicest guy ever
and im all well I dont know pat, but right now I dont like him
im very open minded, and I may like him later on, but right now I dont
and so the teacher was super pissed off and said well thats very disrespectful and you shouldnt say those kinds of things and Id like to see you after class
and the people in the class were like , OK SO who wants to go next! someone go! this is awkward!
and the guy right behind me went and his example of something he knows was "that this kid derek in front of me needs jesus"
and I turned around and was like, I have jesus dude
so I tried to explain to the teacher why I did that but she wasnt hearing it,
but I was able to explain it to the pat guy after class
I told him:
I said I didnt like him because he seemed like a really smart philosophy guy and I figured he would understand me picking on him to make a point
because there is no viable reason for me to not like him, since I know nothing about him.
and for me to say I KNOW I dont like him without even knowing him, is perposterous
and he understood me after I told him that, but he said I gave too much credit to the other students assuming they would understand
I figured in a high level philosophy class someone would understand my reasons.
but they all just freaked out like it was kindergarten and we were all little kids
So Im probably going to drop the class because there is a million pages of papers due, but
im gonna talk to the teacher and see if I can stay in and just be there but not get credit or do any of the work
