Where's all my David Lynch fans?
I just saw Inland Empire. Call me a slacker of a movie geek, but I hadn't even heard of this move until I saw it in the video store. Fucking awesome! I love the Lynchian mind-fuck. Plus, Laura Dern could have gone her entire life and only made this movie, and I would think she had a rich career, because she gives what some old-school critic like Gene Shalit or Roger Ebert would call a "tour de force." In other words, she kills it. She's spellbinding. She emotes like a fire hose and presents three completely different characters in one film. And she's still very hot, I might add (She turns 40 on Feb 10, same as my brother. Happy birthday to them).
The movie is entirely shot on DV, and with Lynch's sensibilities, I think it's worth watching for the lighting and color alone. But then you get the freaky, convoluted, reality-bending writing... I felt like I was watching someone's nightmare. Or more like I was in one. Lynch has a way of immersing, or maybe submersing, his audience. Just incredible.
I have to go re-watch the entire Twin Peaks series now. Ohhh, Madchen Amick, how I lust after thee. Sherilyn Fenn, how you make me salivate. And Mr. Lynch, how you screw with my head. See y'all in the diner.
