So, I have been on a crazy emotional roller coaster for the past few days, all related to work.
My job at the newspaper is going well. I'm steadily getting more detail oriented (re: anal retentive) but it hasn't totally paid off yet. We all send our papers through one more proofing process before the final print is made. We usually get our paper back, in it's imposition (how it will be printed) and go through and check for any mistakes. If you have no mistakes in your final proof- which is tough- you get a perfect paper. Though I've helped a lot of people, by looking over their file before it goes to press, I haven't actually achieved a perfect paper yet. It's frustrating, but at least I am sending fewer and fewer pages back to the printer each month, and a lot of people, look to me to check their final file before they send it to print- which is nice.
Plus, I leave for the Dominican in just a few days, for a week, and don't have to pay a dime for it.
Anyone who knows me, knows I am crazy, and have balanced two jobs for the past year. Well, it's all over now.
Back in December, my boss at the small retouching photo studio I worked at (Colorworks) closed the doors of the store to relocate, which he said, would only take a month. In the mean time, I patiently waited for my pay cheque from him in the mail. It never came. So when the store reopened, I happened to be passing by it one day and popped in. They didn't have it.
I then started getting emails from my boss about the Colorworks website. In the weeks leading up to the closing of the store (temporarily) I had been working on a website for them while I was in on the weekends. Before I left, I left them with a disc of all the files they would need to give the person hosting the site. Apparently, the disc didn't work.
This struck me as odd, and slightly irritating, since I had emailed him numerous times about my cheque, and he had never responded.
In the mean time, I received my T4- before my pay cheque.
Finally, after a few emails back and forth, I phrased my last email in such a way that he could not avoid the topic of the wayward paycheque. He then wrote me an email that said, I would have to wait for it. He didn't have the money right now.
I wrote him back, politely, and professionally explaining that this was not acceptable, and that I had no choice, but to hold onto the website files until he paid me.
He then wrote a nasty, unprofessional email back and at the end, fired me, and told me he was going to charge me with theft if I didn't drop the disc off to him by the end of the week.
Big mistake.
By firing me, he has cost himself not only a star employee he was just too cheap to pay- but also a lot more money- as he now owes me termination pay for giving me no notice. I have a feeling I'm going to have a hell of a time getting my money- but there's where the Ministry of Labor comes in- he has until Wednesday to pay me everything he owes me, including termination pay, vacation pay, my last shift, and holiday pay, before I can file a claim against him.
It sucks because he used to be an awesome boss- and now I'm seeing his true colours.
