So that job that I wasn't going to take...
I took it.
We'll see how it goes. They offered me a decent amount of money, a great benefits package and two weeks vacation. Not to mention I had a couple of people I know say that it's a great place to work. Plus, when I was offered the job, they were really nice and excited to have me.
The one thing that I felt really bad about was that I told my other boss of the photo studio that I work at, that I likely wasn't going to take the job. Now I've had to cut my hours back from every weekend, to only two weekends a month. I feel a little bad because though he knew this was coming eventually, neither of us thought it would be so soon.
The thing is in the media industry- particularly graphic design it's hard to find a steady position when you are just starting out. A lot of the work is contract and it runs out after a year and you are back where you started. Plus, this is editorial design- and that is really hard to get into starting out. I was talking to my dad about it and I think he said it best;
"What if you don't take it and you can't find another job that you can feasibly take and you are without a job for five or six months? It's not like you can't keeping looking."
So that's what I am going to do.
My dilemma is there is a small advertising agency in town that really needs a designer to cover the maternity leave of one of their employees. My friend works there and she told me about it. The people sound great but...it's contract and no benefits. Though they may hire me on permanently after the contract- but no promises and even then, no benefits- but I may make a bit more.
I don't know what to do because they want to see my work, but I am starting my new job next Thursday- it would look really bad if I suddenly up and left them for this other place. Or applied to the other place, got an interview and wasted their time because I already have a job.
I guess I have to content myself with some things happen for a reason. I'm going to give this a shot and see how it goes. I just hope I made the right choice.
