Seriously, people on the ttc (Toronto transit) really need to learn some general etiquette. I'm poor and a little bit of a hippie bum, so I use the ttc. No car= being forced to use 2 feet + heartbeat or public transit with tons of people I don't know who might stab me. But hey it's better than driving alone in an SUV like many people do.
So I am on the streetcar yesterday. Longchamp- all the way from Queen West and Spadina (Toronto people will know what I am talking about) to the Lakeshore and Kipling. I was in China town where I got a totally cute bag with smiling skulls all over it for five dollars- oh and about two pounds of cheese....yeah Tiriel wants cheese for our anniversary. Not just any cheese, but cheese from Global Cheese in Kensington Market, which by the way, is one of the best places in the city for cheese lovers, their staff is so friendly and knowledgable...
Anywho I had managed to get my little butt all the way down from the north west end of Toronto without a single person invading my personal space, blasting their music, or shoving me, or sneezing on me. I was impressed.
So after my little shopping hour, I headed down to Queen street to hop on the Longchamp street car and head to my friend's place which is at Kipling and Lakeshore (shady, not so nice area). Two guys get on about fifteen minutes or so before I get off, and one of them proceeds to blast ghetto rap music from his cell phone. It's not like it's just one song. He listens to one, at full blast and you can tell that everyone around him hated it. Then he switches songs. So it wasn't even just one song he had to hear....
One of the cardinal rules of public transit is to keep your music to yourself. That means wearing headphones, not singing outloud, and keeping the headphone volume low enough that everyone around you can't hear it.
I'm a pretty patient person, but I lost it. I whipped around in my seat in the direction of ghetto loser and events went like this;
Me: "Listen, not everyone likes your music, so could you please turn it off or listen to it with headphones"
*bus driver looks nervous in the rearview mirror*
Ghetto Loser: "pfft"
I debate whether to leave it alone or not and debate the consequences. If I don't stop it, despite the annoyance I may end up with a crummy rap song in my head. Meanwhile GL turns the phone up sounder and his friend (Ghetto Loser) laughs.
Me: "Look, if you don't turn that off you are going to lose your cell phone out my window"
GL then turns his phone off.
GL: "Shut up you dumb bitch"
Seriously. If not for the fact that two people in the past week have been stabbed on the ttc his cell phone would have been in my hand as I got off the streetcar, and under the streetcar when it took off.
People can be so self centered it's not even funny. I hate public transit.
However I did have a blast with my friend, in her ghetto neighborhood. She goes to the same school I do (Humber College) but at a different campus. I thought my area of the city was kind of ghetto...her's is much worse. I swear our school chose two of the worst areas in the city and thought "This is the perfect place to build a school". Not so much.
Hmm, that was a long, kind of pointless entry...oh well.
I'll end it well....
Saturday is mine and Tiriel's fourth anniversary Yay!

People do it in the mall I work at - and I want to punch them in the head.
Happy anniversary!
I liked your story. I'm glad you spoke up.
PS I read that the magazine is being printed, definitely do let us know when it hits the stands!
