I went to Broadway in Seattle today.
Broadway used to be cool. It used to be like Hawthorne in Portland.
Now it completely sucks. I knew it had been going south for a while, but today's visit sealed it.
The Broadway market Mall is now a QFC with a couple of stores glommed onto it.
the old QFc is now an empty building.
The (practically brand newly remodeled) safeway is closed.
The drugstore next to taco bell is also closed.
Orpheum is gone.
Various other stores which had been in the mall have moved here and there along the street.
Aoki is still there.
Vivace is still there.
dilletante, Bailey coy, Pagliacci, twice sold tales- they are all still there...
I was standing on the sidewalks at 2pm on supposedly one of the most busy shopping days of the year: they were practically empty. the street punks don't even hang out there much now.
The loss of the commons area (inside of the mall) is big. University ave has already become a big ugly mess. looks like Broadway may just end up a place for the people who live there to go get groceries.
[grumble]
If I ever was going to move back up here, I'm sure not now.
oh, the guy at explodingdog.com has some books out, and Bailey Coy had one of them. Very cool. That store continues to push the envelope.
