Finally got around to canceling phone and cable. Now I'm just paying for Internet.
It was funny, if a bit sad, listening to the woman on the line try to convince me to keep these outdated services.
"911 links your address to your home phone, your cell phone won't do that!"
How many scenarios are there where I will be able to dial 911 but won't have time to give my address? Bear in mind, I live in a condo complex. Explosions, fires, those will be reported. Pretty much I could have a heart attack and faint right as soon as I finish dialing (though with the phone in my pocket, I've saved several precious seconds that I would have had to spend walking/crawling over to the phone). Just about every other scenario, including someone busting down my front door with an axe, has me better served by carrying a cell phone.
"Well, you know you can't get everything from TV on the Internet. You don't have OnDemand!"
Well, no, not everything. I mean, Hulu gives me access to the only network shows I watch (The Office and 30 Rock), but I suppose I am missing out on yet more reality television. And I won't have OnDemand, which lets me pay for movies I can watch instantly and with a far cheaper subscription to Netflix. I may have to wait a few months to get the movie. But, y'know, I'll survive.
All together? Should save me about $100/month. Yeah. I can't believe I didn't do this sooner. The Internet killed print media. Next stop - broadcast!
