This is a dumb idea that just popped into my head as I was on my way out the door, but I wanted to get it down.
I think the reason I react so much to the word "spirituality" is because people will often reject a good way of life, or system of morality, or scientific knowledge, or overall enlightenment by warning that we must attend to our "spiritual needs".
What, exactly, are our spiritual needs? What would happen if we neglected them? My guess is nothing.
I was reminded of the beverage Brawndo from the film Idiocracy.
"Here's a healthy diet for you, it'll improve your life and let you eat whatever you like. We need your help with this because increased demand for the items in this diet makes it easier for everyone to get them."
"Wait, your diet neglects the Brawndo food group."
"The what?"
"The Brawndo food group."
"I'm not sure what that is, but I don't think we need it."
"Oh, I beg to differ. The Brawndo Corporation says that the Brawndo food group is the most important food group."
"I see. And what kind of food is in the Brawndo food group?"
"The best way to reach your daily Brawndo requirements is to drink Brawndo."
"And that's, of course, sold by..."
"The Brawndo Corporation."
"Right. So, what if we just ignore the Brawndo food group?"
"Then you'd be neglecting your body's need for Brawndo."
"But what would happen?"
"Your body would lack its minimum Brawndo levels."
"And that would be..."
"Bad."
"Right. Okay. I'm not adding that to the diet."
"You'll regret that! The Brawndo Corporation will never support your diet, and people listen to what they say!"
"Why?"
"Because they supply the world with much-needed Brawndo!"

I find that when you keep pushing rationality and confronting people with pesky facts and such, they eventually just start to pretend you don't exist. It's some sort of self-preservation mechanism. It's actually kind of entertaining.
