Went to an Adavant show last night. For those who somehow hadn't heard me say it, Adavant is my brother's folk metal band. As far as we know, they're the only one in the western United States. There's one on the east side of the country, but they're not very good.
Anyways, it was just at a local club. The headlining act was L.A. Guns. Apparently, they've been operating for nearly 30 years. Axl Rose was a member before moving to Guns & Roses. I used them as bait to convince a friend of mine, who loves G&R, to come along. Tried to recruit others as well, but it's almost impossible to get people to support local music. Even offering the tickets for free, people just want to be lazy and sit at home.
So it was just me and this particular friend. He was blown away. Adavant showed up in war paint and just blew the club away. Hanging around them after their set, I saw a great number of people stop to say "You guys were awesome, what was your band's name again? I need to find your myspace!"
The friend in question wasn't really a metal fan before last night. As we were leaving he told me to burn him a CD of their music as fast as I could. This has been the reaction of everyone I've convinced to come to a show with me. Makes me hopeful that they can actually get a real following and take off. Hell, it appeals to anyone who likes WoW, D&D, or any kind of fantasy nerdiness, or just drinking beer, or swordfighting, or metal. That's a pretty good niche.
Hopefully they can make a lot of money and get back into the studio, record some tracks with a professional producer. The mix on their existing tracks is off. Guitar feels like it's all treble, the bass drum is far too muted, the keyboards are too quiet and the bass lacks power. The vocals came out pretty well, oddly, but they definitely need some remastering.
Still. They've very listenable. Some random person nobody knows made this video. There are dinosaurs for some reason:
Also, here's a live performance of Shiver My Timbers from Muppet Treasure Island. Yes. Muppet Treasure Island. The mix is okay, but the vocals are too low. That's what you get with a handheld camera, though.

I used to not only listen to them when I was 12 but I had a crush on the bass player, true story!

No I guess we won't ever know! Can we drop this now? I so wasn't trying to even debate today! I was just commenting on the hypnosis post, besides when I said I had said the same thing, I was only joking, because lord knows I didn't believe he hypnotized anyone!
