So I picked up Iron & Wine's latest yesterday, "Our Endless Numbered days." I'm sitting here, finally having a chance to really sit down and actually listen to it. Oh, I heard it this afternoon, while reading my book, but I didn't really listen.
Sam Beam' (Iron & Wine) has a seemingly understated delivery. Beautiful hushed tones, acoustic guitar...but his lyrics really got to me. The second song, 'Naked as We Came,'' well...it's effective. I can't think of how else to describe it.
"She says "wake up, it's no use pretending"
I'll keep stealing, breathing her
Birds are leaving over autumn's ending
One of us will die inside these arms
Eyes wide open, naked as we came
One will spread our ashes round the yard
She says "if I leave before you, darling
Don't you waste me in the ground"
I lay smiling like our sleeping children
One of us will die inside these arms
Eyes wide open, naked as we came
One will spread our ashes round the yard"
It's rare to have music affect me like this before I've become more intimate with the album. I don't think I can recommend it enough.
