Day 2 in Tokyo and it feels like we've been here for a week. i love this city, the people, the culture, the food and the drink! Syochu is a crazy grain liquor similar to sake or vodka...found out last night that it is generally served with a mixer, not straight. ahhh, gotcha. with a language barrier these things happen from time to time. I'm staying in the ginza district which is one of the business areas at the tobu hotel. the room has a bidet, which is a new and liberating experience. its like a nato heat-seeking missile and my ass is a foreign embassy. japanese television is a real experience as well. jap pop is strangely compelling, so to is the pixelated porn, all the bits are blurred out!?!?
I went to an area called Harajuku yesterday. Comparing Ginza to this area is interesting as its where many of the young people hang out and loads of streetwear stores and markets. And the young people are so well appointed. Their fashion sense is locked down and generally fits a certain type of style; rocker, punk, hip-hop, biker etc...
Ropongi was last nights destination, where many nightclubs, strip-clubs, hostess bars and the like are...got myself in a lot of trouble and $1500 later thought I should probably go back to the hotel. $750 bottle of Dom white certainly not the smartest purchase i have ever made!
Needless to say it was loads of fun and i met some very cool people, Alys from myspace (and Brisbane) had an amazing sleeve japanese style...she was also the catalyst for my serious financial miscalculation,
today though went to the mori art gallery and saw the most fascinating exhibition i have ever seen 'Fashion in Colors' by Viktor & Rolf & KCI. Themed rooms dedicated to each colour (with a u!) and the history of that colour thru the ages as it relates to fashion. Black, red, blue, white, red and yellow. we got some sneaky snaps so I'll add them up.
Got some crazy toys and books from the museum too.
Off to Tower records tonight and then shojoku, otherwise known as sincity. Apparently any preconceptions of the world are turned inside out there. Excellent. Oh and then Shabuya and hopefully catch up with my friend Chelsea from NZ who works as a hostess in Ropongi.
The photos tell a better story than I can...
