I was really nervous on Friday, we have a security contract at a new housing development site and part of the contract is to supply a guard dog for the construction machinery compound. Well at six am on Friday morning I got a call from our security guard to say that the dog had escaped from the compound and was nowhere to be seen, well as you can imagine this was not what I wanted to hear at that time of the morning and I told the guard to not do anything until I got there because I had a bad feeling that it may have been due to negligence that the dog had gotten out (I usually have more faith in my staff but this girl had not been with us all that long, although I had no reason to doubt her professionalism and I did feel bad about it later) it turned out on closer inspection that someone had broken into the yard by cutting the barbwire on the top of the fence and climbing onto the machinery and they then must have gotten the shock of their lives when they were confronted by a large angry rottweiler that has been trained to let people in but not to let them out and he is also a sneaky dog in that he does not bark unless you try to escape at which point he will go loud and start taking you apart (his name is Devil and just before he attacks there is a small and very uncomfortable pause, well for the victim anyhow haha, where he kinda tilts his head and looks at you sideways, which I can only surmise is his way of saying grace but I digress) well it appears they have then climbed up onto the back of one of the trucks and jumped over the 8 foot high fence with Devil in hot pursuit (I would pay money to have seen that haha and this is why at first glance Rebecca the Guard did not see how he had gotten out as she was looking for holes in the fence at ground level). Anyway the police and local radio station were notified, along with the local childcare centre and 40 homes in the area as he is a very dangerous dog and hates kids, for some reason he thinks of them as lunch, I think it is just because they are small and defenseless making them an easy target.
The funny thing is when our client found out about what had happened instead of freaking out as I had expected, he thought it was great that the dog had done his job and had gone after the would be thieves (they used to get broken into almost 3 times a week and have stuff like tyres and fuel stolen before Devil moved in) that he has ordered 4 more dog units for other sites and has extended our contract by another 3 years and also from 84 hours per week to 120hours per week which is brilliant I couldn't have hoped for a better result (from something that I thought was going to be a total disaster) so much so that I have put Rebecca on full time and given her an increase in her hourly rate (that guilt thing again haha). You may be happy to know that Devil was retrieved later that afternoon after a number of phone calls from locals that had seen him wandering down the road, also no one was hurt that we know of (although everyone hopes that the thieves ended up with an arse full of teeth, one of the truck drivers said that he had seen Devil drinking from a puddle of water on the side of the road and that it looked like he was rinsing the blood out of his mouth and choose dirty water to get rid of the taste of arse haha).
So there you go, that has been the excitement in my week, how was yours.
Update 06/06/06
The day hasn't started so well, I got a call from work at 22:30 05/06/06 to say that the guard dog Devil had gotten out again and this time was hit by a car, it is now 01:20 and I have just been informed by the dog handler that he has been put down.
RIP Devil and happy fucking birthday to me
