I went to New York Comic-Con this past weekend. My first convention ever. I had a blast, and we took a bunch of pictures (my friend and I), but they're all on my friend's camera. And I'm sure I won't remember to post them once I finally remember to ask him for them. So, no luck seeing anybody dressed up as your favorite anime character or anything like that (we didn't dress up, if anyone's interested).
I found the panels to be the most interesting parts of the show. For the uninitiated, the panels are where the major publishers (Marvel, DC, etc) make their major announcements. I mean, I always read the news coming out of these conventions, but it's pretty cool to be able to listen to Joe Quesada and Brian Bendis give you the news first hand. Or ask Jim Lee a question about Wildcats. Or get your copy of Local #1 signed by Brian Wood.
I guess one of the neatest things about my trip was that I realized I'm only like an hour and a half bus ride from "the city that never sleeps." My friend and I each made a pact to hit NYC more often for weekend trips and shit. Plus, he's got a place where we can crash for the night up there too. Now, I'm not a big-city guy. Never have been. But there's just something about New York that attracts you. I can't explain it. It's just there somewhere in the city.
Next time we go, I simply must hit up a kick-ass record store that specializes in vinyl (there's got to be one somewhere) and maybe Midtown Comics and definitely some bars in the city. There, I'm getting all excited thinking about going back now. Soon, soon.
