I nearly got arrested for demonstrating today... would have been the first time since 1991... for carrying an "Oppose the War" sign in front of the Kerry campaign headquarters... but the cops said I wasn't doing anything wrong and refused to respond to the call... gotta love our overeducated A2 police force (most of the time)... they all have to have Master's degrees... makes sense in a city where more than 5% of the population is PhD's.
Most of the Kerry volunteers supported me and they were running out to say "now she's calling the police she won't listen to us, and we're so sorry, we support you, you're only doing what you think is right" and such.
She ("Elaine") was apparently afraid that people would get the idea that Kerry opposed the war... although all but 2 of the 15 or so volunteers who stopped to talk to me *did* oppose the war. I did tell people who stopped to talk that I wasn't associated with the Kerry campaign...
One old guy with a navy cap came along to say we should put all the "A-rabs" into reservations like the Indians... I said "you mean concentration camps, don't you?" but it was pretty good natured... he kept poking me in the stomach with his cane but I just grin and bear it. I told him "your're all right, thank you for your service to our country, you're a brave man" and shook his hand and that got him settled down. I'm OK, you're OK 1, dumb ass redneck 0. LOL.
Before stopping by Kerry HQ I was over in front of the Federal Bldg. and lots of people gave me the thumbs-up and all but a few bus drivers waved and even some good ol' boy construction guys and many people slinked by and quietly said "Thank you" and one woman in a black headscarf (hejab is that how you spell it) beamed this huge smile to me and said thank you and that made tears in my eyes, I knew I had done right today.
