Hello friends, acquaintances, and total strangers. Today's subject is a wonderful fun novel called Guilty Pleasures by Laurell K. Hamilton. It was originally suggested to me by Cloudy, then JennRose reminded me of the Anita Blake series recently, and finally Serena highly reccommends the book series. So, I blame all of you now and forever for this. *~_^*
Guilty Pleasures thoughts & spoilers
I liked it. Anita Blake just kicks ass. It's so refreshing to see the world taken on serious yet fun without how corny it could/would be made out to be during Buffy. I still like Buffy but she couldn't hold a candle against Anita.
The story develops nicely for the first half. We get an intresting range of characters, a smartass but skilled lead, and a decently developed background world. I'm happy with all of that. *^_^*
Cloudy wanted my thoughts on the freak party. Honestly, I've been to worse. London & Paris has some stuff which would blow your mind if you didn't know it was coming. Both in parties and clubs. *shrugs* So the vampire freak party stuff seems no more harmful than a true BDSM gathering. Maybe this is another one of those things which falls under the fact that I've lived a very intresting life. ^_^;;
The one thing I didn't care for, however, was Anita's Lois Lane moment in the middle of the book. Hamilton hands you all of the pieces in a neat little bow about Zachary being dead, having a special charm (the gris-gris) to keep him alive which requires sacrifice constantly, someone who has access to the stronger vampires without being noticed, and a series of unexplained murders. How did it not click to make him a suspect? So I was little bored and a tad annoyed while she went to the meeting with the HAV member Ronnie brought in and going to the Church of Eternal Life. Even Theresa's death was easy to forsee. My enjoyment picked back up by when she met with Nikolaos again and joining with Edward for an assualt on the Circus of the Damned underground lair.
The ending was nicely written out and I'm looking forward to starting on Circus of the Damned later tonight.
