We had cake in my Michigan History class tonight. Why? Because Michigan became the 26th state on January 26, 1837.
My teacher even drew a map of Michigan on each cake using decorative icing. (They were in 9x13 pans, not shaped like the state). The chocolate cake had the upper peninsula on it, and the sugar-free lemon cake had the lower peninsula on it. She even put dots for Detroit, Lansing (the capitol), Kalamazoo, and Marquette. The Mackinac Bridge didn't make an appearance since there really wasn't any room (and what was she going to do -- connect the cake pans?)
We ate it on Care Bear plates left over from her daughter's birthday party, and she brought in little cartons of milk, chocolate and white. Everyone pretended they were "too old" for this sort of thing, but they didn't complain when she said there was enough left over for second helpings.
Happy 168th birthday, Michigan.

I could so go for some Chocolate milk right about now. Do you really have to tell people we're the capitol? I mean I do it too but shouldn't they already know. It gives my lovely hometown such a complex. Happy Birthday Michian, Happy Birthday indeed!
