I don't feel like updating about the CD Exchange weekend yet, so I'm going to copy indigoboy.
Why I Chose the Songs I Did
The mix was called "From the Motor City to the Windy City". I used songs that remind me of driving through Detroit, the long bit between, and driving in Chicago. I couldn't possibly fit everything on there (I have separate mp3 CDs for each city), so I tried to do a variety. Detroit needed some Motown and funk, and Chicago needed some mambo, jazz, and blues.
Anyway.
Detroit:
1) Feel Good - Gorillaz
It has a nice hip-hop sound, it's funky, and it has the line with "motown" in it.
2) Beat City - Raveonettes
Reminds me of I-375 at night, especially on that curve with the big "OMG SLOW DOWN" yellow thingies
3) Light - KMFDM
Makes me think of I-696 near Oak Park and Woodward Ave
4) Unicorn - Apoptygma Berzerk
One of my favorite songs by Apop, a band I was introduced to when I went to City Club back in the day. I saw them there with VNV Nation, actually.
5) My Beloved - VNV Nation
Always makes me think of dancing at Luna in Royal Oak
The Long Expanse:
6) Sugar Water - Cibo Matto
I listened to this endlessly when I was in Chicago during the summer of 1999. It was on "Buffy" that year, which I was introduced to by friends who lived on Kenmore. It always makes me think of that hot summer in a basement apartment watching "Buffy" and eating ramen.
7) Serpentskirt - Cocteau Twins
Everyone needs to experience the Cocteau Twins
8) Throwing Fire at the Sun - Heather Nova
Sexy and sultry
9) Enogoom Wil Amar - Natacha Atlas
For some variety... I love world music, and I thought people might enjoy this since it's sort of belly-dancing-ish but also sort of jazzy
I screwed up. These should have been under...
Chicago:
10) Smoke and Mirrors - Anubian Lights
Reminds me of going north on Lakeshore Drive (from Soldier Field) at night
11) Rippin Kittin - Golden Boy feat. Miss Kittin
Ditto for this one, only make that driving south from Fullerton.
12) Heart Failed in the Back of a Taxi - Saint Etienne
This song reminds me of Ann Arbor, since I first heard it here in 2000, but it fits Chicago better since I tend to break up with people while in Chicago with them. I don't plan on it. It just happens. I used to think it was a curse.
13) Supernova - Liz Phair
Excellent song for singing in the car.
14) Need More Time - Epoxies
I usually blast this on the Skyway before I hit the Dan Ryan
15) Banquet (Phones Disco Edit) - Bloc Party
And then I play this on the Dan Ryan
16) Timekiller - Project Pitchfork
This is my "El" song while underground in the Loop. It helps distract me from the people, noise, darkness, etc. It's a good subway song in general. It's also one of my favorites at the club.
17) Fun With Drugs - Velvet Acid Christ
The ULTIMATE oh my god yes yes yes driving song for any big city expressway. I always play this while driving south on 90/94 or east on 290 toward the skyline. It hits the best parts during the tunnels near the Loop if I time it properly. It's also good for Lower Wacker (zooom).
*Super Awesome OMG Bonus Track*
If you haven't figured it out, it's "Wonka's Welcome" by Danny Elfman.
