on the subject of body modifications....
when I was little I had a gap in my front teeth.

you can kinda see it there...except I was five and those are my kid teeth and my front tooth is also chipped from falling down on pavement, but when my adult teeth came in a similar gap was there. Like a lot of kids, my parents took me to get braces. At that point I kinda wasn't sure if I wanted to get rid of my gap, but I had the idea in my head that most beautiful women had straight teeth.
At the orthodontist I also found out I had an overlapping palate and they put some sort of Medieval torture device in the roof of my mouth. it looked like a spider and had a long skinny key that stuck into the middle of it and when you cranked it, the pressure it created to move the bones in the top of my mouth was excruciating. that first day I was pretty sure I wanted to keep my gap. until I woke up a few days later, having had that thing tightened more each day and discovered that now my gap was big enough to stick a pencil eraser in between my front teeth. I cried and cried, they were supposed to fix the gap, not make it bigger ! To make matters worse, since the device was on the roof of my mouth you couldn't see it and it didn't look like I was having any dental work done! I had to go to school and the kids were like "what happened? you look like a hillbilly!" So my mother marched me back the orthodontist and insisted that he put on my braces even if he wasn't going to tighten them so it would at least look like my teeth were under construction.
and so my teeth got fixed...

(yeah you're probably not looking at my teeth right? )
I mean they didn't turn out perfect, I sort of didn't wear my retainer much, but they are pretty straight and my distictive gap is now unnoticeable.
and you know what? I kinda wish I still had the gap.
anna paquin's got one...

I wouldn't have been any less hot or beautiful, if i hadn't changed my teeth....but I wonder if I hadn't done it, if i still had the gap, would I embrace it or would I be wishing for change?
