Five days into the year, Baltimore had already had 8 murders. I think the city collectively saw that it slipped out of the Top Ten in the national murder rate and wants to reclaim its title.

If you want to show her the real city, drive through the east and west sides (just stay in your car and don't make eye contact with anyone on the street). Otherwise, the Inner Harbor is the tourist-y area. There are a bunch of restaurants there (including a good but slightly expensive seafood place called The Rusty Scupper that has a fantastic view of the city). There are also some good restaurants in the Fell's Point area, like this place called The Red Star that had one of the best hamburgers I've ever had.
As far as non-food attractions go, the National Aquarium (which is in the Inner Harbor) is really cool. I've never been here, but Power Plant Live is supposed to be a good dance club thing.
For me, the coolest part of Baltimore is seeing a bunch of places they've shown on The Wire. If you need more suggestions while you're here, you could give me a call: 512-636-4811.

I've really been missing "home" (Newburyport, Mass) badly lately, although its mostly for the people. I moved there when I was 22 and stayed until I was 40, so basically all of my adult life was spent there. Parenting in California is great but the pay in my field, wood construction and joinery, frankly sucks here, and the cost of living is a good deal more than back East. The only thing that has been a winner across the board has been benefit to the kids living in this climate and environment, and in truth that covers it for me. Still, sometimes I really would like to wake up in the morning in walking distance to Fowles News on State St.
