I think in IT you can get really far without having a degree at all, but on the other hand there are some places that wont even interview you if you don't have a bachelors or honours.
I'm quite cynical about my bachelors - The only reason that I'm getting is to show that I have a semblance of intelligence and an aptitude to learn, and to get into interviews...

The books are awesome I still want to get my hands in the audio books though,,,it is read by spike from Buffy :p Should be fun. My Parents gots me a kindle for xmas so i am also quite happy with things.
