So the travel is done for a while. And what the hell have I been up to? Here's the basic run down:

Visitors

At the beginning of the month, my sister visited. Which is always great. We did the architecture river tour, went out for tapas, and checked out Graceland cemetery. We also hung out, and watched movies plus the Olympics. I really love seeing...

See, the great thing about the East Coast is that travel seems so much easier, in a way. Sometimes I feel stuck inside California because it's such a huge state. It takes 16-20 hours just to drive south to north.

Enjoy your "carefree" student days while they last. It's a bitch out here in the real world. wink

I do what I can for the people of this world. I do what I can.

Reminds me a bit of Europe. Except that's country to country instead of state to state.

Off to Boston tomorrow.

Once I'm back, maybe I'll try for a real update.

Vacation: not just survived, down right enjoyed.

More to come.

I've seen him once; he was OK (certainly not up to the standard of the YouTube clip there).

The Waifs were the support; they were good. Worth seeing.

The weather in Chicago has been gorgeous.

I had a fantastic time with my sister in town: we did the Architecture Foundation boat tour, went shopping, visited campus, lazed around the house, and checked out Graceland Cemetery.

Watched some Olympics, which is very "not me" but it was great.

Have a place to stay in NYC. Our free place fell through, which sucked. But we...

Summer is winding down, and things are still hectic on this end. My sister is in town this weekend, then we're off to NYC.

In the meantime, I've managed to rework four of my dissertation chapters into what I think are considerably more palatable forms. Plus, I've got the ball rolling on some job stuff.

Now, I just need to get some data work done...

How did that one chapter end up working out for you? Did you ever end up sending it anywhere else?

Tomorrow: Lollpalooza.

Woot. I just hope it's not 100 degrees.

Oh, sweet. I have many good memories from when that was a traveling show.

No plans as of yet. Vegas for her birthday though. smile

I generally have that thought at least once a month. wink

So, my wedding anniversary was this week. FIVE YEARS. Madness.

We did it low key: exchanged cards and hit the local French restaurant on Saturday. It was really nice. We're saving a little cash for our trip, so we didn't do gifts.

And finally saw The Dark Knight today. Adored it: better than I thought. I really dug when Batman had his sonar lenses in....

So I'm kind of always stressed out right now. Editing. Working on looking for a job. Doing data work for E. Plus, I have plans next weekend, my sister is in town the weekend after that, THEN we're off to NYC for a week. So I feel busy, and up against a hard deadline.

It feels like I have about eight plates spinning up in...

And I thought my schedule and life could get a little overwhelming...

Sounds like you'll be lucky if you're dug out by the fall.

As harrowing as these stretches of time can be, I try to enjoy them, since I yearn for them when I'm sitting on my ass for too long.

Yeah, I've watched every season but the first pretty closely. It's a near and dear subject, so it's easy for me to stay interested. Plus, you know, hot chicks in tiny outfits. wink

So, currently recovering from a minor gastrointestinal thing. Sick is dumb. I hate sitting at home in sweatpants. It makes me feel foul.

Pitchfork over the weekend was pretty good. I really enjoyed Jarvis Cocker, the Hold Steady, King Khan, and the Apples in Stereo. The one bummer was that I didn't stumble on any new bands over the weekend. So it goes.

Festival food, maybe. I'm glad you're feeling better.

That's how my father is. He only gets sick once a year and when he does it's a doozy.

So, there is a job opening at the liberal arts school in the town where I grew up. I think, a year ago, I would have told you: "No way in hell." It's a tiny department, and I wanted to live in a big city. And part of me still wants to be in a big, fancy department in a hip urban environment.... but.

But...

I have found that old sneaks up on you.

It's sneaky like that; one day your at the cutting edge of cool and then suddenly you're yelling at kids to get off your lawn and turn down that music.

So, hey, what does Alan Moore think of the Watchmen movie, and Zack Snyder and the (super shitty) 300?

I would rather not know [anything about the movie. Snyder] may very well be [a nice guy], but the thing is that he's also the person who made 300. I've not seen any recent comic book films, but I didn't particularly like the book 300....

Not taken in any sort of dickheaded way smile - it's a good question. I like those.

Um. Don't know, can't afford it... I think there's enough staging in theatre to decouple it from the backbrain. Also, enough conscious choice ("Hey, let's go see ... "). And you have to pay to get in.

I could be wrong, because I never go.
