That's a much easier way to get character than manual labor, getting beaten up, or eating disgusting veggies.
toothpickmoe:
Little known fact: sucking ass is also a good way to build character.

So, some of other online friends in a different neck of the woods wondered what I'd been up since, as I've been a bit MIA as of late. Basically: I'm head down, hunkered in getting ready for my interview. I'm about sick of my job presentation, which is in its THIRD version now (and will be tweaked at least once or twice more in major...

Tomorrow, I'm delivering my practice job talk for the first time in front of people and all. It's been getting smoother at home, when I've been running it in front of the mirror. Then, Monday, I'll present it at workshop. And I'm working inviting a few friends over midweek next week to watch it a third time. And, finally, before I head out - I'll...

"The local teams" being some of the most storied in each of their respective franchises. Plus you have the Chicago Fire, which is probably one of the best names for a professional sports team ever. Only because of the city, of course.

Knock 'em dead, kiddo!

Sounds as if things are heading in the right direction smile

The weekend trip was totally a blast. My dad was surprised. We saw Max Payne, which sucked. We ate at the Japanese hibachi place, which I had never done before and that was a total blast.

In reality: the visit home only made me really hungry for Thanksgiving. I just wanna be home for a few *days* now, and really soak it up. Soon...

I'm a tried and true Dodger Fan. When it comes to football I have no team, as I am a resident of a city without one. I generally pick on of the shittier teams and root for them. Most often the Browns or the Bills. You?
madscience:
I love Chicago. I lived there for 1.5 years in high school. And then for the first 3 years of college, my parents still lived there, so I came back for summers and holidays. I've often tried to return to Chicago to live, but my career just hasn't worked out that way. It'd be great to visit again, it's been a while.

So.

Holy fucking shit.

Big Fancy Pants University wants me out for a job talk.

Color me knocked flat on my fat ass.

I have no details; they called whilst I was out. I'll call them tomorrow and see what's what.

I am terribly happy and excited and scared shitless all at once.

Whoa. Well, that's a load - but I'm glad you're doing better now.

Yeah. . .a very unhappy occurrence.

Srsly - tough as nails huh?

Not really. I've just decided that it's best, as a practical matter, to be proactive when confronted. It's all pragmatism: I was actually quite terrified.

Also: let's hear it for dueling Bob Dylan entries.

How about that?!

Pshht! Don't worry about no "Big Fancy Pants University"; you know you got that.

salome:
Hey, good for you! Good luck!

This weekend is my dad's 60th birthday - so we're headed home as a surprise. I'm totally stoked.

That's a great surprise. Have fun.

As far as fantasy sports goes, I didn't either. It made me into a sport watcher. I could not have cared less about sports when I first got into fantasy teams. Now I'm a fanatic. *shrug*
salome:
Congratulations to your dad!

Thank you for the compliment on the set, I really appreciate it. smile

It's hard not to get excited when Big Fancy Pants University wants to see additional chapters of your work. It is, obviously, not an interview request and not a job offer. But you know, it was a good way to end Monday.

Well that is definitely a step in the right direction smile

So you know, I'm just hanging out. What are you up to?

As an addition: Bob Dylan rules. And, I mean that in the most amazing sense of the phrase.

But, I mean, duh right? But when you think about what Dylan has accomplished - it's mind boggling. First, he's an icon and probably the most important "pop" or "rock" musician ever. But, on top...

Okay... It's hard to pick one, or even two. Ummm.

I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight. With his then wife, Linda.

Hokey Pokey. Ditto. An attempt to re-imagine British folk music via music hall.

Mock Tudor. From which, this.

The Old Kit Bag. From which, this.

I do the "big three." Basketball, baseball, and football. Assorted pick 'ems as well. You?

Minor excitement this weekend: hard drive failure in the Macbook! My Macbook is *easily* the worst computer I've ever owned. But I don't think this problem was the ole 'book's fault. I think I bought a shitty hard drive when I upgraded six months ago. Don't worry: all was well and backed up. I lost like half an afternoon's worth of work, that I already...

I agree about Apple; my experience was always that they couldn't do "cheap".
sockpuppet:
My Apple experience is from a long time ago. I always loved the interface, and even the System 7 (yeah, I know...) interface was better than XP - what, twelve years later? But their support was patchy, and their "budget" models were a false economy for the buyer.

I don't talk much about politics here anymore - it just felt pretty pretentious after a while to me. (Not that writing about politics is bad. But political scientists who keep journals on current events? Ugh times two.) But with the election coming up, I do have a personal reflection:

Given the nasty tone of the McCain/Palin campaign, and the decade of hate the right-wing...

I haven't finished it yet, so maybe I'll hate it. But for now it's doing well.

The fact that it feels like there's a precedent for that sort of behavior is almost as tragic as the act itself.
sockpuppet:
I agree.

And (in the unlikely event he wins) I wouldn't give long odds on McCain surviving his first year in office, either.

Le Guin: The Left Hand Of Darkness is excellent, though its allegorical nature is a bit close to the surface at times. The Dispossessed is also very fine; probably better. I would say, though, that if you can stomach fantasy with wizards and dragons, then A Wizard Of Earthsea and its sequels are - IMO - flat fucking awesome, head and shoulders above most good fantasy writers. (Not that there are that many of them, either.)
(You may see it listed as a "juvenile", something aimed at adolescents. It's a lot more grown-up than most fantasy.)

So, my recommendation: Wizard, Left Hand, Dispossessed, in that order.

So the weird thing about looking for a job is that it is not at *all* conducive to writing a dissertation. I actually think this is an endogenous problem: people tell you when you're on the market you don't get much writing done, so then - you feel like it's ok to slack a bit. But you really are busy: sending out applications, writing a...

I don't mind the rain. I wasn't a big fan of getting so wet (despite my umbrella!) that my paperback got a little wet around the edges. Still totally readable and so on. Just a drag.
