hehe... Well, it's a paying gig, so there's that anyway. These days, you take what you can get... frown

It merrily slogs along. Still snowing?

Stupidly, I am now considering two different job offers.

Am I an East coast boy or a mountain state fella? This is my conundrum.

In different news:

Dear People at Concerts (especially all you Lincoln Park looking motherfuckers),

First, please stop backing up. Seriously, where the fuck do you think I am going to GO?

Second, shut the fuck up. For real. I don't want...

Hahahaha!! SPin class...

I just shove them aside and get in front of that type.

WHERE in the East, what mountain state?? DO PM as I'm curious! If it's not NYC, it's crap!
salome:
hahaha, I haven't been to Metro in ages for precisely those reasons. God, people can be so stupid. What show did you see?

Look at you, lucky with all the job offers!

Thank you for the compliment on my Member Review set! I appreciate the support. smile

So probably maybe I think....

I got a job.

I'm the top choice, but it has to wind its way through the bureaucracy still. In particular, since it's at a state school, there needs to be assurance that the "line" is still active. It SHOULD be. But I cannot officially say "I iz employee!" yet. But it's close, ducklings.

It's a cool department, and a...

I think you're probably right, and that's certainly how I'd like things to pan out: paralegal cert first, then the MLS, then me finding a job that doesn't crush my soul into fine powder. biggrin
madscience:
Hmmm, I find it kind of odd that they would interview people and then need to confirm they actually have a position to offer. I wonder if someone in the dept isn't being straight with you, or if someone in Administration isn't being straight with the dept. But maybe budgetary things are changing on a regular basis there and they (the dept) are just being cautious. I know budgetary things are changing on a regular basis at my institution!

Well hopefully, best case scenario, you'll get another offer and then you can force their hand a bit. Getting another offer will also allow the dept to put some pressure on Administration if they're being slow. And you can get a non-binding draft of the offer letter then too. Are you getting good mentoring through this whole process?

Helena, Montana.

Totally. Fucking. Rules.

It's like a mini-Madison, Wisconsin, but with better scenery. I love it there. I want to go back.

I need to exercise more. I want to run. Winter needs to end, so as I can do both of these things.

I am taking the rest of the week off, mostly.

Like I said, pretty country but watch out for a desire to bomb things...

Good luck on that one, I would love to be out there myself.
toothpickmoe:
Me too. I can't imagine going through something like that.

I have just gotten a cold, just in time for (what I hope) is my last interview.

Tomorrow: Montana. I'm secretly excited about this one. At first, I was more like "Montana? WTF bitch?" But people keep telling me it's gorgeous. So I'm ready to roll.

After that, maybe someone will offer me a job?

I just hope it's not the LAST place I went....

Nice. I've never been to Helena, but have frequented the state several times. In-laws live in Billings and sister-in-law lives in Bozeman. Beautiful, beautiful state. Unlike anywhere else in the US. When I'm a millionaire I'll definitely have a hobby ranch tended by Argentines there.
toothpickmoe:
Glad to hear it. It has certainly grown on me over the years.

That's a good question...

I know I am not 100% anonymous on here, so I "watch what I say." But I will say this:

Doing work for someone who is fucking totally capable of doing it for themselves blows a goddamn donkey. A donkey with VD at that.

I dream of the day when I have (relatively) more control over my fate.

Not the BAR but there is a regulatory body in IL and I am under the impression that they tend to take stuff like this fairly seriously.

Even if it is all 110% futile I will feel better.

I just read through your last few blog entries, and it sounds like things are going well! I hope you have continued good luck!

I should be like working on my job interview stuff. But I'm sort of worn out on it right now. I'll pick it up again in a minute .....

Since the last update, I've gotten offered two more campus visits. So, that's a total of three this month. There's also one more phone interview I'm waiting to hear back from. Fingers crossed?

I wish I...

I am just shy of the halfway mark, but may get 30 more days at the end of it.

I am hoping not.
subrosa:
Thank you for that answer, sir. 'Twas a good one.

Also, good luck with your interviews.

Relearning my job talk is less fun than it sounds like. But I do think it's becoming a leaner, meaner beast.

Tonight: decadence and meat!

Well, not sure yet, but it looks like I may get a post-doc. And there may be a sort of intermediary moment where I go out for a visit, and I assume I will be making a presentation. That should be interesting, because I don't think I'll want to do ALL dissertation, but I'm still discussing potential new projects with the post-doc advisor. So I really don't know what I will or should do, in that case.

Anyway, yeah, the phone interview went well, and I've heard from my dissertation advisors that she seems quite interested in me (i.e. she called them for references). So this is good. The post-doc is a bit of a switch from my dissertation, but it's almost exactly what I am looking for.

My fingers are crossed. I hate talking about this stuff before I'm sure about it. You know how that goes.
toothpickmoe:
Oh, I'll figure something out. wink

Job front updates: two more schools have contacted me for phone interviews (that's three this spring now), and I have moved onto the "next round" at another school. None of these are Fantastic Super Jobs, but several of them are good solid positions in eminently fine locations. We shall see.

I'm going to do one of those annoying pop culture blogs that is a "list of stuff I'm enjoying right now." Just to prepare you. Because I'm a *conscientious* motherfucker like that.

The first.

We've been working our way through Bones on DVD lately. Of all the CSI-type shows out there, this is by *far* my favorite. I like that the main character is a...

On Martin Luther King Day, my wife and I celebrated our dedication to racial harmony by watching Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer back to back.

It's not even a joke how much better the first movie is, is it?
