I did Elvira one year. I got a waist cincher from this plus size costume shop (Just read the size chart and measure yourself with a measuring tape). Then I bought a simple black dress from Wally World and cut out a plunging neckline and a raggity hem. I think it was like $12. I had black hair at the time and I styled it into a big puffy crown like Elvira. Sometimes when you're a big girl on a budget you've got to improvise for Halloween. There are some websites out there with cheaper plus size costumes but they don't have an exact measurement size chart so it's hit and miss.
Holyclothing.com has aEbay store with some great plus size costume'ish clothes. They have ren and gothic type stuff. They ship from India so it takes about 2 weeks to get your item but the prices are decent, the items are beautiful and they have very accurate measurements.
I hope this helps a little. I'm a big girl who LOVES Halloween. I've spent many hours looking for costumes. Last year I looked for like 8 weeks....haha. Ironically enough I really don't plan on anything this year cause of the move. Last year we had a big party.

Easier said then done cause it's a natural instinct to want a companion but it sounds like you still need some self-exploration.
