So, I'm in India for the next three months. I'll be in New Delhi for September, Kolkata (Calcutta) for October, and Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) for November.

I'm doing research on my dissertation topic, which involves the USSR and India.

Be safe and have a great trip!
baudot:
Sounds like fun.

Have your compulsory bout of dysentery yet, or not yet landed?

I just went to a 1980s-themed New Year's party. I decided to dress up as Ozymandias since Watchmen was written, published, and set in the 1980s.

I won myself a nice bottle of Patron silver.

I'll post pictures as soon as someone shares them with me.
waldo_jeffers:
That's rather an original idea for a costume! Did you have to explain it to many people or did most people realise that you were Ozymandias?

I fly back to the US early tomorrow morning. Three months of normalcy before I return here to Moscow for more research.

I hope all of you are doing well.

I hope everyone had a pleasant May Day! I'm back in Moscow doing research. I've been here for a month and I'll be here for two more months. A nasty cold (or crazy Russian plague of some sort) kept me from going out to do anything special.

In other news, I fear that I will be booting people from my Facebook "friends...

mmmm, yeah I have been wanting to make lavender ice cream too! Tell me how it goes for you smile. All of those sound delicious.

Yeah, I mean, people know I have an account on here since I usually post links to my diy blogs on twitter and facebook, but I'd rather them have to work a little bit if they're trying to snoop on my account!

And thanks smile.
jensen:
That's awesome! I so want to try that! I didn't even think about boiling it before hand, that makes sense. Gah, I'm so going to try that soon, I'm jealous smile. I'm glad you put my video links to good use smile

Oops! Didnt know you were gone. I was too busy trying to get through "Adam Smith in Beijing". Hope your trip was fruitful as hoped.
pervyoldguy:
I want to return to the book (it was recalled to the library before I could finish). Probably will want to read The Long Twentieth Century first. The most intriguing thing about the book for me was the way it framed China today as a classic Smithian market economy... alas, I can't faithfully regurgitate the details at this distance from the text and in this state of chemical enhancement... anyway, for the author it's precisely this dynamic (which isn't the Libertarian "Free Market" Smith's casual readers make it out to be) which makes China still a leading candidate for being the engine of socialist transformation worldwide. Many variables come into play. I also enjoyed the early chapters trashing the U.S. "boom" years, making the correct call that it was all run up on the credit card, starting with Reagan. And so on... I should make more effort to get into this stuff in some depth... anyway, worth a quick review if it winds up in your hands, I'd think....

Ok, party people, I am heading out of town for a few days. My brother is getting married in Napa Valley, California. I will be gone until the 31st. I'll get to drink lots of wine and see San Francisco. Catch you all when I get back.

I am writing a paper on Trotsky at the moment. One of my sources is the excellent trilogy by Isaac Deutscher. I figured I would share one passage from the 1905 Revolution:

A trade-union spokesman was just declaring his union's readiness to join in the general strike, when a detachment of soldiers and police occupied the corridors. A police officer entered the room where...

Well, I've been hogging more than my fair share of grad school, so I hope there's some left over for you. Where're you applying?

And no need to be too sorry - getting the interview with Stimson takes a lot of the bite out of getting turned down at ICG, as I'd rather be at Stimson anyway.

BTW, I've joined the Socialism group and've been lurking on the Stalin/Trotsky thread with interes.
