Hey all,

We just added our last short movie, MAGIC JUAN, to my movie site. This is one I may have mentioned in these pages, as we've been screening it around over the past year or so.

Now it is on the web for all to see. Enjoy!

Oh yeah, and this week, the fruits of my DVD splurge arrived in the mail:

Simpsons...

Anyone who knows the joy of Ataris is okay with me!

Magic Juan was very cool. What made you pick drdave.com for the toy site? That cracked me up. Thx for the greet as well.

For those interested, I've been lured back to this site. I started cruising some of the boards again about a month ago, then got an email "Special Offer", and...

Much has happened, I'll catch up with whoever wants it as time goes on.

Cheers.
galvagin:
Hey, welcome back to the fold.
legionnaire:
Welcome back! Glad to see you around again. How did the film shooting go?

I won't be posting in this journal anymore. I don't really like keeping stuff in more than one place, and I have some other people who are not on this site, that I like to keep up with as well.

So, for anyone interested in what I have to say, you can always visit My Blog.

But of course, feel free to continue leaving...

Bummer that you won't be updating this journal anymore. Hope you'll still be around though!

Just wanted to drop in to say, for those of you who care, I have not been around this past week, due to an extremely busy work schedule.

Large software client, and the movie mentioned in my last entry. And it seems that in addition to directing, the backer of this movie wants my company to actually produce it.

So, since we are looking to...

Thankees. Nice to know people are paying attention wink
legionnaire:
Thanks, I'm glad you've liked the articles so far.

That one you sent me from New Scientist is awesome - that's a great magazine, a bit more accessible to the layman than Scientific American, and often gets interesting submissions.

As for that article - I wonder if there could be bose-einstein condensates inside the crystal with those sorts of pressure? That would be really wild - a quantum white dwarf, like a gigantic super-atom.

Very curious goings-on. I have just been more or less offered my first feature to direct. And it has backing and I would be paid and everything. I just got a pretty hefty software contract, so the movie would have to wait until May. Which is fine, because it takes at least that long for the lawyer to do the legal stuff, form the company,...

Excellent news. Congrats and good luck. That kind of period piece should be an interesting challenge. Can't wait to hear more about it.
legionnaire:
Well, try and make it if you can on Saturday. But if not, I think this will be a weekly thing, so whenever. But it should be good, just hanging out, drinking and playing pool. Very low key.

Just saw the new Errol Morris movie at the Angelika. "The Fog of War". I will write more about it as it sinks in, but anyone who can, should see it.

It's an interview with Robert McNamara, the so-called "Architect of the Viet Nam war". The movie covers a bunch of stuff though, from WWII, to the Cuban Missle Crisis, up to Viet Nam.

The...

Hey, happy birthday! (a bit late, sorry about that.) Hope you had a good time!
legionnaire:
I know what you mean about staying away from here for fear of it eating all of your time. When I have a busy day in the lab I just make sure that I stay the hell away from my computer, so that I don't get sucked into some discussion on CE or whatever.

Keeping my fingers crossed for the second martian rover landing tonight....

edit: oh yeah, and SGNY has started up weekly bar meets on Saturday afternoon. So if you're free on a Saturday and can make it to the Tompkins square park area it might be a good chance to meet some people. Let me know if you're interested and I'll send you a private message with details.

I figured you'd be psyched about that. I think it's really cool - apparently a textbook landing. Never any word from poor Beagle 2, unfortunately. But hopefully this one will pan out, and with another one scheduled to land in a few months, things could get really interesting, really fast.
legionnaire:
I'm a huge fan of robotic exploration, it's cheaper, more efficient and makes more sense than sending humans places. Especially now that robotic probes have become so much more sophisticated - can your average human perform a spectral analysis on a geological sample by himself? I'm sure you've seen The Right Stuff - sending humans in space was purely a PR move, and now it seems like NASA has finally realized this.

My big ideas on space exploration are these - first, I think we should send orbiters to each planet with large solar arrays (I guess they'd have to be nuclear for ones out past, say Jupiter, since there isn't enough sunlight) and their sole function would be to act as locator beacons for any other probes that we might want to send. I think it would significantly reduce any error in getting both manned and unmanned spacecraft to their destination.

Second - I think there should be an international space agency that gets money from any country who wants to participate. It would reduce redundancy of missions and would allow us to take on more ambitious goals - let's face it, saying "this part of the moon belongs to the US" is pretty ridiculous.

Happy New Year. Every year I have the same resolution:

More fun, more money, more interesting work.

The past year saw the meltdown of yet another relationship, the possible beginnings of a new one, the solidification of my little movie company, the "vision", if you will, for the kinds of movies we want to make, the things we want to explore, etc. We also found...

Happy New Year! Those sound like pretty good resolutions to me.

I agree with you on Cryptonomicon - it was entertaining, but not nearly as much as I had anticipated based on the way everyone was raving about it.

As for the SGNY party - unfortunately, since this is going to be at someone's apartment, the host has decided to limit it to members only. However, I'm trying to organize something at a bar for possibly next week that would be open to anybody, so my guess is if you showed up there and met people then they would probably go ahead and make you a member. Sorry about this one though!

So where are we now? I am going to do this from memory, so if I mess up, be kind.

Right after Congress decided to declare independence, Washington was in what is now Brooklyn Heights. The British had over 300 ships in the lower bay, and had landed 30,000 troops on Staten Island. Let me just say that again. 30,000 troops. 300 ships.

The British...

Thanks for your comments in my journal. It looks like you and your partners have a good thing going on with your company, so congrats on that...

I am actually reevaluating my interest in doing my magazine, at least for right now. My intention is firmly set on expanding my creative resume this year, and between that and working the day job (location sound), I've already got a pretty full plate...

But I'd love to see yours once you have the beta done. Please send me the link when it's up and running, and good luck with everything!

Best, Davis

Looks like no sign of little Beagle...bummer.
legionnaire:
I'm bummed about Beagle 2 also... but haven't completely given up hope yet.

As for the SGNY party - I think it's supposed to be for SGNY members. I actually thought you were in group already. smile I can ask and see if you can just come along with me (or just come along anyway). If you want to apply to the group - we just reviewed applications for new members two days ago so we probably won't do it again for at least another week.

I wonder how much of a geek it makes me, when I am staying up late X-mas eve, just to see if Beagle2 landed on Mars alright.

Strange how this has so little effect on my life, but I am on the edge of my seat about it. I remember when we got the Mars rover pics back, and I even remember way back as...

Fun facts about the birth of our nation:

Corrections( due to re-reading source ): Here's what really happened. The vote for independence was taken on the 2nd. Another vote was taken on the 4th, with the same results. But the delegates did not sign until Aug 2nd. John Hancock did put his John Hancock on there on the 4th, but more as a formality, it...

Yeah, i've definitely had similar experiences with New York women. The truth is often stranger than fiction, especially in this city. It does provide some amusement though, even if it's of the "I can't believe we've allowed civilization to degrade this much" variety.

As for your request... that's a good one. A very good one, and one that I'm particularly interested in. The short answer - nobody knows. The long answer... I'll post. It's going to have to be a multi-part session, I'll do one on cellular/molecular memory (I may have to split those into two if they get too long) and one on structural/neuroanatomical memory. Very cool stuff though.

Yep, SG is great for meeting people with all sorts of random knowledge. I actually stole the idea for biology discussions from Minty, who does Archaeology hour every other week or so. You should check it out, it's full of fun facts.

Have a nice christmas. Are you going to go to the SGNY party on the 3rd?
