The two film versions of La Bte humaine that I have seen are both a little disappointing. I mean, they are interesting, but don't attain the same degree of madness as the Zola novel. They are:
La Bte humaine (Jean Renoir, France, 1938)
and
Human Desire (Fritz Lang, USA, 1954)

Recently there was an adaptation of La Terre called This Filthy Earth (Andrew Kotting, UK, 2001) that really was in the spirit of Zola: it was absolutely disgusting!!

Well I only like zola cos it's dirty!

Just kidding, although I was quite surprised about how risqu certain passages are in La Bte humaine. I have taught the novel and its film adaptations, and the films have to leave a lot out cos they just wouldn't get away with showing it. It's the hysterical quality of all the sex and violence that interests me...

There's a difference between taking care of your body and being vain. It is perfectly right and good to take care of your body and even to want to look good. Vanity comes in when you start spending too much time on looking good, to the detriment of actually taking care of yourself. So I would say that a little makeup here and there, some nice clothes, etc. are not vanity. But wasting 2 hours in front of a mirror is. And you obviously know the difference, because it's about attitude; you're not a slave to fashion, as you say, and it's not all about surface appearance.
