I definitely cried about it all night. And I AM somewhat spiritual. I hoped someone would pick it up or that it stopped suffering by dying quickly, ok that sounded evil, but I meant it in a caring way.
I was ready to go back and get it after a couple of hours of thinking about it, but i did not.
I don't get home till midnight so that's when I saw it. I'm sure i couldn't have called a vet then.
But thanks for the support. And yes I know I can't save every animal in need, but that was my first time seeing something like that and it really hurt.
I came home and gave my two cats the most affection I think I've ever given them, smothered them

I have to agree, honesty is always best. Relationships not going the way we think they should is just a fact of life. It happens, we survive, learn more about our hearts, and move on. He'll either get it or he won't - you have not control over how another person reacts. Dragging it out will cause more pain in the long run.
