I can be, uh... a little distracted sometimes. Yesterday was one of those times, as I'm riding home on the bus, engrossed in my book, I look out and see an EL station. Thinking this was my stop, I hurridly gather my things and lurch off the bus only to discover after landing that I got off at the wrong EL station. But in doing...

just got your e-mail - and even got a chance to see yr. myspace page & groop. you mean to say misanthropic, too-cool-for-themselves hipsters exist on myspace?!?! get the fuck outta town!!!
anyhoo, nice to see mo'photos of yr. life. as far as your "first date" is concerned, i think i need to say another thing here. when embarking upon a new relationship that basically starts at burning man, it is of PARAMOUNT importance that you do not confuse the issues. it's very easy for a person to seduce someone by bringing them to black rock, so you end up equating your prospects for love and happiness with that person with the experience you've just shared with him/her. trouble is that relationships, it's important to remember, ain't like your virgin burn, and i know of too many examples of wishful thinking that started on the playa, and ended badly, than i can go into here. so just keep your feet on the ground regarding the future with this person.
as for the rest, i figure i'll e-mail you a bit later r-garding all that. ta-ta. haven't listened to J&MC for years, though it was kind of a mind-blow to see bill murray drive to the tokyo international airport with "just like honey" playing in the background at the end of "lost in translation." it all reminds me of how old i've become...

so i just got back from checking out your photos. it's good to know that you've found home, linda.
so i've been to the burn six years now. wow - it's kind of scary to really acknowledge that, in some ways. it seems like every year, my commitment to the community and its mission is strengthened. and it is wonderful to see that it has stirred up something strong in you.
i'll tell you a little story. the first time i went in 1999, i didn't expect the experience to change my life. i went because i felt i had to go, not because i wanted to, basically. my experience, though, built up pretty powerfully all the way up to the night of the burn, and i can still remember seeing this little spark in the man where the heart would be, and i felt as if i was looking into a mirror that reflected my soul, and my deepest wishes. i understood that that effigy was all of us, and what we thought were once our liabilities may just be our greatest strengths.
i don't know how you interpreted it, but it sounds to me like you had a pretty powerful experience there. so just know that from here on in, no matter how difficult readjusting to the rest of the world may be, you didn't leave the playa empty-handed. you now have us, this invisible force that now bonds us all together. and that's what remains.
*&*&&*
okay, in other words, how grand that you're a writer, too! i've done the freelance journo thing - have written for NY Post, LA Times, High Times, scads of alt-weeklies all over the country. we'll have to trade war stories together one day.
and yes, i did see your li'l pin-up photos. damned handsome lady, you are, i must say. hope you get your set up one a'these days. have you heard back from missy or sean yet?
okay, back to this john trudell lecture i've only been half-listening to as i've been typing this to you. long may we burn.
p.s.that giant flower you saw on the playa was made by my neighbor (and roommate of pearl), patrick "eleven" shearn. i actually helped make that thing, but even i didn't know it was gonna come together like that.

hey, again, linda. nice to see that you've added me as a pal.
ya know, it's kinda funny how things like this work, but as luck may have it, my account is about to end on Sept. 29th, and I'm not gonna renew my membership. i will be happy to discuss the details with you offsite, but let's just say that after two years, you find out a lot about the institution that is SG that you wish you didn't. suffice it to say that when you look closer, the empowering, femalecentric, grrl-power brand that SG sells to the outside world is a bald-faced lie, and i would not recommend becoming an SG to any self-respecting woman i know.
i'm sure you're used to this sort of thing as a pro model, but still, you should know a bit more about what you're getting into, and at least try to keep this site and its petty politics at arm's length if you become an SG anyway (and that's harder than you might think at this point. this whole place is designed to fuck with your head.). in the meantime, at least we have met, and i can get in touch with you through your personal website. so that i shall.
oh, also, after reading your stuff, i couldn't help but think of an old friend of mine from college named shana ting lipton, who sort of prowls a similiar beat here in LA. i figured i'd hip you into her.

HOLY CHRIST ON A GLOW STICK!
Damn that headline is funny, courtesy of Mark Morford, columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle and fellow Burner who, in the article that follows, really puts into perspective the necessity of frivolity and celebration of the human spirit, such as with a huge, orgiastic, art-sex-party such as Burning Man, in the tragic wake of Hurricane Katrina.

I would have loved to have gone to New Orleans - I always wanted to go. I've been just about everywhere else.
Now I'll never truly get to see it as it was... ever again.
Nothing mean spirited was meant by that comment. We were both unaware of this fact and were in shock - it was an exlamation of shock - not a taunt. My goodness NO!
If you want to get misty-eyed, especially since it was your favorite place, rent "Down By Law," a b/w film by Jim Jarmusch (starring Tom Waits and Roberto Benini, in his first - I believe - English-speaking film). It was filmed in and around New Orleans and all along the bayou. It made me so sad to see all the shanties which are now gone forever. Even though the French Quarter remains, all the small places with character are completely wiped out.

Yup that's pretty poignant stuff - disasters are just a fact of life all you can do is just get on with it, and take joy from the good things to balance it all out. I've personally never been to New Orleans either and I'm gutted that so much stuff to see and experience is now gone. BTW though IIRC the film Angel Heart also manages to capture a lot of the city's flavour.
Well now, this was a myspace blog entry from May 29, 2005, which has turned out to be a rather significant one; it served as catalyst for meeting one of my now very closest friends, someone with whom I just attended Burning Man for my very first time... the first of many times to come.
I think I'll even include the comments, which are funny...
