Oh my god EARTHQUAKE.
I have experienced 1 previous earthquake in Japan, which was like a jolt. I was lying in bed and it felt like someone had picked up my bed and put it back down. It was insane.
But yesterday, we were FREAKED OUT. The hotel actually started to sway back and forth a little, and we looked at each other, like, "Is...

Well, at least you haven't had any godzilla or mothra sightings!

Also, how can you close a mountain?

The day before, after hitting Mosburger we stayed home and finished watching Densha Otoko, then watched Shimotsuma Monogatari. Yesterday was the Duel Jewel concert, and prior to the concert we dressed up in our Gothic Lolita finery and strolled around Harajuku. (Gwen Stefani pronunciation: Herajuku. I hate you, Gwen Stefani. You have ruined Japan.)
We had a bite to eat at a very fancy cafe,...

I don't really have any comments of substance to add, except in so far as it may please you to know that there are folks (or at least, a folk) eagerly following your adventures.

Big craziness yesterday. Ariel kept trying to call me, but the hotel wouldn't connect to the room for whatever reason, and there were cell phone issues. So I stayed in the room until I FINALLY got ahold of her...and was stuck here until 5:30pm. It sucked, but I had Densha Otoko to keep me company. She brought over her friend Julia, who is amazing, and...

shabu shabu is fun, but it lacks the thrill of cooking sizzling meat over fire or the art and beauty of raw fish. its hard to make boiling shaved beef in hot water exciting. It is just me? I don't think even squad of yakuza heavys could make eating shabu shabu profound. Where is the skill or touch required in determing when to pull the beef out of the hot water. I could understand why you did not stay at the 13th floor shabu restuarant. ARRR!!!

Since I am all about Japanese Studies, probably my favorite thing in the world is reading the little signs and notices posted around Japan explaining to everyone how they do things. For example, I am pretty sick today, and just woke up recently (around 2pm). There's a note here that says "Please give us your requested to make up your room" and tells me that...

Sounds like a better prospect in terms of your host family than last time. Didn't you have some problems with them?

Thanks. i hope you get better soon. That reminds me of the Dave Barry's essay on Japanese electronics instruction books: "please never to push this button twice" eeek

I've been trying to keep a detailed account of all things, but after yesterday and our trip to Harajuku, I realize I can no longer keep up.
Anyway. Day before last, which was Christmas Eve, involved going to Don Quijote (that's how they spell it) and stocking up on cheap crap like keychains etc. But by extension I bought the cutest keychain of my entire...

Yesterday a lot of things went wrong, but I like to believe that in the end, we redeemed ourselves somehow.
The day started with a trip to the electronics district of Akihabara. We took the Yamanote line, no big deal. I made a lot of jokes about the types who shop at Gamers, and soon we were surrounded by tiny maids who were passing out...

Yesterday was a Shibuya day. We went to the Morning Musume museum, and Junior Station, and Ariel and I wept openly at the sight of gorgeous jewelry and clothes that we will probably never fit into. Curse our voluptuous American body types.
We went to Closet Child and I bought a skull ring and a hat which is essentially the stuffed animal head of a...

Last night I got into Japan at about 6pm Japan time. I took the Narita Express train to Shinjuku and found the hotel, where Ariel was waiting. We walked around Shinjuku and ate at a buffet-style yakiniku place, which was awesome. You pile your plate with raw meat and then take it back to your table and cook it. Afterwards we had coffee and chocolate...

I'm leaving for Tokyo on Tuesday. I'll be there sightseeing for 11 days with a friend who wants to do all the touristy stuff. We're staying in Shinjuku right next to Kabuki-cho (aka the red light district), I have no idea why.
Happy New Year everyone...see you next year!

Inspired by Twinkie, I have learned to knit.
And knitting is AWESOME.
I can't seem to stop, which will result in the longest scarf ever.
