So I've been trying out Arch Linux on my main machine (laptop) for the past week (was running Gentoo previously) and I have to say I'm pretty impressed! Things "Just Work" (TM) and I have had to spend *very* little time trying to tweak things. This might be a happy medium between Gentoo (source, can customize everything) and Debian/Ubuntu (binary, preloaded configs). I'll continue with...

I've used plex for more than a decade as one of the early Linux adopters (anyone remember xbmc?). I like to support projects that I like and with plex I bought a lifetime pass some years ago. Every project is not without it's issues and over the years there has been some good and bad releases (and features), but usually they get ironed out and...

So far I think Brave browser is the one I am going to stick with. My only complaint is that certain sites *cough*geforce now*cough* only work with chrome and edge. That seems dumb since brave is also chromium-based, but even with a user agent change it still rejects it. I'd rather they give a warning that the browser is unsupported and allow me to agree...

Does anyone else do this? I'll see a message notification (can be anything: email, text, dm, whatever) and I'll read it. But then, instead of replying right there and then I'll think about it for a moment or so, get distracted, and then forget to go back and actually respond. Looking at my messages here on this site it looks like I do it a...

I find it quite annoying, even irritating at times that in general sexuality is a taboo topic - no matter how minor the subject is, yet violence of any level is totally 'ok'

Example? Sure! Go to youtube, start typing in "violent fight mma" (or similar phrase of your choosing) and as you type pay attention to the suggestions! Now do the same with something...

I tend to read more and more things electronically these days as opposed to reading them on paper. However, I still prefer paper over an electronic version. This is especially true for textbooks, proof reading, and when reading sources for an article/essay. Does that make me old or have I just not found a good e-medium?

fredhincanada:
I’m the same. I’m probably just old.
cerebus666:
Now that you mention it @fredhincanada, I think that I'm old too 😁😂!

I assume if time travel into the past was possible I would have visited myself by now!

Does that seem like a reasonable thought? Because my ADD brain immediately thought of other reasons why I may not have visited myself: legal restrictions (laws against it), impracticality (maybe I can't be in the same "space" as my past self), I remember "then" and why would I...

I need some major refresher on mathematics (all levels!) It has been about a decade since I was an undergrad and I don't use anything other than arithmetic at my current employer. So I need a refresher on most topics (the last math class I took was whatever the required calculus series was) and then something to help maintain the skill over time (i.e. daily...

I created a Mastodon server with the idea of it being more science oriented (but that isn't a requirement, just a emphasis - anyone can join):

https://madscientists.social

Right now anything goes (as long as it doesn't draw legal attention).

If anyone wants to help out let me know.

Would anyone, besides me, like to see a Mastodon instance that puts the focus on science?

okay so I created one: https://madscientists.social

I often wonder how much we can trust cloud providers. We know that Google reads our email: "

  • Google may transfer, store and process Customer Data in the United States or any other country in which Google or its agents maintain facilities. By using the Services, Customer consents to this transfer, processing and storage of Customer Data."

as well as looking for copyright data...

User's aren't customers, user aren't even products, user's are data sources. User's behavior and habits are the product. The product is sold to their customers (businesses) so those businesses can leverage that information (the habits of the users) in order to know who to target for which type of advertisement. That's it. It's not a conspiracy, it's capitalism. We can trust them to do the things that increase their profit. If you are their customer (a business) you can trust them. They give their customers ways to protect data, encrypt it, and back it up. Their customers data is very important to protect, because their customers pay them. Their users don't pay them, they get services in exchange for information about their habits. Install a pi-hole on your network. Disable tracking cookies. Don't use google Chrome.
