what do i need? possibly some drugs, maybe therapy. i'm not too keen on either one of those things. what's my alternative? a self-help book? what is that smell in my apartment?

I would start with self-help books. Then if desired, therapy. Last resort would be the drugs. And if love-life is the source of your problems, take a break for a while. If it's lame friends, take a break from them. If others are letting you down, find happiness without them. Focus on what makes you happy by yourself.
