Holy shit. I spent like 3 hours today getting aspell 0.33.x to compile on a dude's xserve (rolling out a site on it). 0.5x works great on OSX (10.2), 0.33.x doesn't. But after hacking the CocoAspell patches, reverting to GCC 2.95.2 and some voodoo magic, BEHOLD THE MAGIC

That sounds about right. Anything Apple tends to behave weirdly. The apple folks have gotten way too used to a closed source base. I've given up on compiling DSS on Linux, I revert to hacking the libs to get the redhat 7.0 version run on modern linux.
