This is just a quick copy/paste from a message board I frequent. (yes, I am a nerd. eat my ass.)
The punk(both scene and Music) that a few of us lived and loved, and many of us are sure that we missed, is alive and kicking all over the world. The older generation who insists that the time has passed, simply grew up and away from the scene. Did a subculture influenced from post-punk arise that many often consider the modern 'punk' movement? absolutely. But punk is in the same fucking place you left it. It is in the church-halls, trashy house parties, parking lots and shitty clubs/bars that they have always been in. Many of us grew up, stopped looking, left the cities and pretended that our scene during our participation was the climax of punk.
Sure, alot of alt. bands started being labeled as punk by the mainstream media. Because of that, a new scene popped up around this music and started calling themselves punks. That doesn't mean that it is fucking true! this is the same mainstream media that called D.C. punks extremists and L.A. punks rock-gangbangers. The same media that had no fucking idea how to handle the stooges or the pistols or the clash. The same media that has no idea who sham 69 is.
If suddenly the media caused everyone to start calling an apple by something new, like, ranch dressing, that wouldn't mean that ranch dressing didn't exist anymore, it would just mean that the mainstream media is retarded.
If more kids got back to street level and looked for the music , like we did when we still beleived, instead of complaining that bad religion, the germs minus darby , the new misfits and the Ergs!, aren't real punk, the scene might stop leaving them behind. Don't get me wrong, too many shows, specifically in North America, are filled with screamo and pop-punk fans. However, there are still struggling punk kids who can't play music who are angry as hell , playing to an audience who is much too small.
