Being that she was so much younger than I, she was in high school when I left town for the great Northwest. The commonalities were too hard to ignore, though. We grew up in nearly the same area, though she was up on the hill. We had a lot of common friends and aquaintences. Were familiar with the same places. Strange to think. These things will slowly but surely mend us together. Time will be the glue.
Now here she was, climbing into our cab and I was having a tough time keeping my drunken eyes from lingering too long on her legs, hoping I might catch a better glimpse as her skirt moved. She got into the seat and my eyes werent fast enough. She caught me. Damn it. I felt like such a perv.
She grinned. So, where are we going now?
I thought you had it all planned for tonight. I winked. I grinned nervously. As if to say, you know. I was trying to hide the nervousness. I was trying to flirt again.
I was still nervous for some reason, and I know it had nothing to do with what happened at the bar earlier. That was done. I had been nervous since this morning. She had been planning this night for over a month and I didn't know what she had in store.
When I woke up today I tried to relax by the pool, but it was in the back of my mind. I had lunch at one of my favorite places, Paco's Tacos, but i couldn't fully enjoy it. No matter, I would be back, but after it was all about killing time. Anticipation, I guess, along with the nervousness. Perhaps it was excitement. I know it was, but I refused to admit it. I'm a married man, damn it, and I shouldn't be hanging out with some girl. Thats beside the point. She's coming in her cab, because that's responsible.
The cab arrived, pregnant with the trouble to come. It came bearing Trudy. I walked up and opened the door.
"Hop in!"
I did.
Please, let me make my own future with all the pitfalls.
"You said you like dive bars and I think I picked a beauty."
"Is it a real dive bar or one of those bars designed to look like a dive bar, but everything is new and pre distressed like the jeans on thier bartenders?"
"We dont really have the second kind here."
"Yea, I guess. It's been a while and they're all over the Northwest. They keep popping up in..." I became aware of the cabbie staring at me in the rearview mirror and I stopped talking.
"Uh huh." She looked at me to continue.
I motioned toward the front seat. "Oh sorry!" She proclaimed to our driver. "T-Bird Tavern, please!"
His gaze lingered on me for a few seconds and he turned around to face Trudy. "Not a problem." He turned back and we were off.
