Alistair Reynolds is indeed great. House of Suns is my favorite, although the whole Revelation Space series is great too. I just finished The Red: First Light by Linda Nagata. I'd been putting it off even though she's one of my favorite hard science/nanotech writers because I'm just not that into military SF, but that was a really dumb move on my part. It was absolutely gripping, with very plausible near-future tech, great pacing, and really well-written fight scenes. Highly recommended—I can't wait for the sequel!
