LeBron James now faces the challenge he accepted last summer

By Mike Mayer

@MikeMayer64 on May 29, 2015, 8:00a 5

David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

He came home to end a 51-year title drought. Now he's four wins away from actually doing it.

Last summer, LeBron James announced his return to the Cleveland Cavaliers with a poignant essay in Sports Illustrated. Everyone from Ohio who I know was moved by it in some way. There were so many affecting lines that resonated with Cavs fans, and he spoke to all the emotions we dealt with during the years after he left for Miami.

"My relationship with Northeast Ohio is bigger than basketball. I didn't realize that four years ago. I do now."

"But what's most important for me is bringing one trophy back to Northeast Ohio."

"I feel my calling here goes above basketball. I have a responsibility to lead, in more ways than one, and I take that very seriously."

"In Northeast Ohio, nothing is given. Everything is earned. You work for what you have."

But it's the next sentence, the second-to-last one in the essay, that seems the most relevant after the Cavs beat the Hawks on Tuesday night to advance to the NBA Finals: "I'm ready to accept the challenge."

Cleveland, as you may have heard, has not had a major professional sports team win a championship since 1964. (I like to specify that we're only lacking a major pro sports title, because Cleveland definitely dominated pro indoor soccer once upon a time.)

There were many challenges facing LeBron upon his return to his hometown team, but I've always believed that the challenge of history is the one he was referring to. The now-51-year title drought is the elephant that hangs over every home crowd in a playoff game. It's happened at the Q before; at the first sign things are going wrong, the energy is sucked out of the building. Here we go again.

Few athletes who play here seem interested in the tortured sports history of the city. They're not necessarily indifferent to it, but they know it doesn't really have any impact on the games they're playing at the moment.

Rather than ignore it, LeBron decided to accept it as his challenge. He did so once again after the game on Tuesday night when he said, "I think we all know how long it has been since a champion has been in this city. You can try to not focus on it, or try to say it's not about that. But we all know it." And with that, LeBron made it clear the role he wants to play: He wants to be the man who ends it.

Just as he did in his essay, he stopped well short of guaranteeing the Cavs will win the title. The task before this team -- beating the Warriors, who have been the best team in the NBA all season -- is enormous. Kevin Love is out and Kyrie Irving probably won't be 100 percent. Golden State is a heavy favorite.

It is fitting that the Finals would be so difficult. After all, a victory would overcome 51 years of disappointment. I don't know if LeBron will be able to do it, but if he does, it will be his greatest accomplishment.

It won't be given, it must be earned.

Klay Thompson officially diagnosed with concussion, out indefinitely

By Mike Prada

@MikePradaSBN on May 29, 2015, 3:00p 1

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

The Warriors' guard's status for Game 1 of the NBA Finals is up in the air.

Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson has a concussion after all, the Warriors announced Friday. He will not return to the court until he goes through the NBA's concussion protocol, so there is currently no timetable for his return. This throws his status for Thursday's Game 1 of the NBA Finals in doubt.

The concussion diagnosis came after "extensive examinations over the last two days," the team announced. The league's concussion protocol requires a player to pass several exercise tests symptom free before he can return to game action. The team's physician makes the final call to let a player return, but he must consult with a league doctor before finalizing that decision.

Thompson suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals when Rockets wing Trevor Ariza kneed Thompson in the head after biting on a pump fake.

Thompson was quickly diagnosed with a right ear laceration and was immediately cleared to return to the game, which was a stark contrast to the longer evaluation Stephen Curry received after his fall in Game 4. But blood poured out of Thompson's ear just as he was about to check in, forcing him back to the locker room for stitches. By the time Thompson returned, the Warriors had sealed the victory.

Yet concussion symptoms started to manifest themselves after the game. Thompson failed to hear a reporter's question in his damaged ear, then vomited and couldn't drive on the way home, according to his father. Initial tests thereafter were negative, Thompson's agent told USA Today's Sam Amick. However, that was pending a visit to a neurologist Friday morning. It appears that's where the concussion was officially diagnosed, though the Warriors did not confirm that.

This is not the first time the Warriors cleared a player to return to a game, only to have him develop symptoms later. The Warriors allowed Harrison Barnes to return to a playoff game in 2013, saying he passed concussion tests. He was later diagnosed with a concussion, though he didn't miss any games because the Warriors had been eliminated.

You guys...I had my first ever photo shoot yesterday and I cannot even handle how amazing the pictures are coming out!!!!! Here's a little peek. I can't wait to finish up my hopeful application with this as my debut set. I am literally tearing up about this shoot. Thank you @missy and @rambo for making this place a dream come true for
