MySpace Blamed for Sex Offenses

In yet another example of the internet being blamed for every possible crime, MySpace.com is under scrutiny because seven underage girls were assaulted by men they met through the website.

Police are investigating whether as many as seven teenage girls have been sexually assaulted by men they met through the popular Web site MySpace.com.

The girls, ages 12 to 16, are from Middletown and say they were fondled or had consensual sex with men who turned out to be older than they claimed. None of the incidents appeared to be violent, said Middletown Police Sgt. Bill McKenna.

The social networking Web site allows users to create profiles that can include photos, personal information and even cell phone numbers.

In a statement Thursday, MySpace.com said it was committed to providing a safe environment for its users. The site, which includes safety tips, also prohibits use by anyone younger than 14, though a disclaimer says the people who run the site can't always tell if users are lying about their ages.

In other news, it turns out that many MySpace users regularly lie about their age, weight, height, attractiveness, and how interesting and/or difficult their lives are.

In other news, the estate of Alexander Graham Bell was ordered to appear before a municipal judge today on charges that the telephone, popularly known to be Bell's invention, was responsible for more than a century of illicit "phone sex" encounters. The encounters, prosecutors claim, are allowed to be made entirely without verification of age.

I'm sorry, but i think sex offenses are the LEAST of the problems with MySpace...
Even my therapist has problems not checking her ex boyfriends profile to see what he is up to. Its damn depressing! blackeyed blackeyed

And this is different from someone lying about their age at a concert how? Sure, it's on a bigger scale, but it's not like they've banned concerts because of that... whatever

I think the real root of the problem here is video game violence. It always comes back to video game violence.

BTW sexual abuse of minors is never funny. Thinking that people never lie about their on line profile is.

speaking of internet abuse, i read a *newspaper expose* on dating and the internet. or i skimmed it. i was struck by the line 'google your date. its no sin' i'll admit to doing this, but is it something that should be encouraged?

it's a fairly common problem here, we have quite a few of those profile websites that deal with only dutch people and even some that only deal with young girl profiles.

it's like every other month that website get's in the news because some girl got raped/assaulted/abducted by some geezer she met on there.

one of the conveniences of such a tiny country i guess, everyone you meet on there is within range.
