SuicideGirls: Dirty Laundry - Woolly Thinking

SuicideGirls love to get knitted, rock & rolling with ripping yarns that add color and flair. Those that take to the needle can express the punk rock DIY ethic with easily affordable, one-of-a-kind designs, that are as fun to create as they are to wear.

Fashion Notes
KnitzAndFeltz offers handmade scarves knitted in eco-friendly bamboo blend yarn. There's a range of styles, but we like this long and skinny, open knit one, which is finished off with a 5" fringe at each end ($25 from Etsy.com). * Fair Indigo sell fair trade fashions for men, women and children. We like their handknit popcorn hat, made from 100% merino wool ($34 from FairIndigo.com). * Those with a DIY aesthetic will love these striped, punk rock corset gloves. You'll find the pattern, detailed instructions and 'how to' videos at TheRunningYarn.com. * And for the ultimate punk rock knitted accessory, head over to Knit-Head.com. They sell handcrafted Mowhawk hats, which can be custom ordered in a variety of styles and colors -- we like the subtle all black Punk Is Not Dead and the outrageous red, white and blue, God Save The Queen versions. * Those who don't have $110-$175 to invest in a head gear right now might want to take a look at Knit-Head's Pretty in Punk book. It features 25 projects for needle lovers inspired by the designs of Vivienne Westwood and John Galliano, and is available in paperback ($13.57 from Amazon.com).

Did we miss your favorite woolly shot? If so, upload it to our Woolly Remix Album HERE (the girls are also name-checked at this link).

Check back every other Saturday for more Dirty Laundry and let SuicideGirls show you the best way to (un)dress.

Out with Silicone in with Wool

The BBC reports that midwives at Liverpool Women's Hospital have been using knitted breasts to teach mothers of premature babies how to express milk. The latex models have proven too expensive at about £35 (approx $70US) per breast.

The hospital appealed for volunteers to knit the prosthetic breasts in order to cover demand. They received a brilliant response and have had offers from all over the world.

She said: "We've taken loads of calls with offers of knitting, which is brilliant, from Scotland, England, Ireland and the USA.

It's been stated in the past how important breast milk is to the growth and strength of newborns, and often new mothers require encouragement to take on the daunting task.

There is no racial discrimination either as the breasts are produced in a variety of skin tones!

This is one of the most important appeals I have seen recently in British healthcare, and I hope that with the attention it is receiving that it might influence practices all over the world.

If you want to volunteer as a knitter then the pattern will soon be available from the Lactation Consultants of Great Britain.

Knitta, Please.

I don't know anything about Montrose, Texas besides that it is home to a gang of knitters called Knitta Please. This crew knits and purls for the street, creating colorful cozies for everything from trees and stop signs to subway handrails. Adopting crafty faux-rapper pseudonyms such as AKrylik, their mission is to tag, just like any other style of graffiti. It's the medium that's so unusual when this crew cuts it.

Freeform Rules

SG needle-crafters in the group Stitch and Bitch have been working on a bi-coastal, collaborative mail-away knitting chain since January. Inspired by this technique, the piece is created organically, without a pattern, and is bursting with the personality of its contributors. The group seems to plan on auctioning off the final work to benefit a charity upon completion, which means SG Stitch and Bitch members are not only tremendously talented but have huge, awesome hearts, too.
