Summercase Festival
Tags: blondie, verve, summercase, barcelona, interpol, edwyn collins, grinderman
The hangover is over (hah!)
What inspired me to end with such a terrible hangover?
The answer is Summercase festival.
Friday afternoon, that's when everything starts. It's 7:30 pm and Edwyn Collins is performing. Seems like a classy concert, but I can't really recognize the band, until they play this:
You should hear this song sung by Spanish people making "ee oo hh i" fuck. How to explain?
Later a fresh beer and Grinderman. Yes, you're right. Nick Cave with some weird musical project which I guess I couldn't understand. I know (because I play in a band) that playing can be very evasive. But hey, there's people in front of the stage. From what I've heard, Nick doesn't know how to compose, but did "compose" all the songs by himself. To me it was like "I want to sing this song like this, and it will sound better if you make nyaon-nyaon and you start beating your maracas against the crash while I play some notes whenever I want"
Luckily I didn't like them. I left during the fourth song to another stage, where Blondie was going to perform half an hour later. So really close, in the 4th line, there they were. Debbie Harry was looking amazing. With a black and white striped dress, a strass short jacket (more like sleeves) with holes and some amazing shoes. I can't believe she's 63.

Listen to this while you read:
Chicken skin
So yeah. I wanted to see them performing forever and it was worth it completely. I can't say they played all the hits because they have so many, but every song they played was a great. It was breathtaking to hear the 40000 persons there shouting "atomic" or making the "uhu wohooo" of heart of glass.
In a moment of craziness she threw her shoes to the people. How diva!
When Blondie ended we started to run to see Interpol in the other scenario.
I love Interpol. It's the typical band that I would hate because indie kills my ears, but they are special to me. I especially enjoy the way they play with guitars and bass. The voice melody to me is irrelevant, but I'm in love with the guitar games.
It was an intense concert, but the problem is that they're not "fun" to see, and it became a bit repetitive in the end.
But they deserve a video, of course they do (it's short, but the one that sounds better)
Interpol was over and we went for more beers. Drinking beers and listening to Maxïmo Park while waiting for the Verve.
I remembered the Verve's singer as a hot guy. But oh!!!
(wet panties) Again, the concert was good technically, but they forgot about the audience. In a fest like that, people can die with such quantity of almost depressed or incredibly involved with the music people.
But still songs like this made my eyes shine:
Tomorrow a review for the CRAZY Saturday
Debbie, I wanna grow like you. And of course you can hate me for my musical likes and dislikes ![]()
MUAH!!

YouTube Gold: Recommended Viewing For Your Lazy Sunday # 5, Part 1
Submitted by Aaron_Detroit
Edited by Aaron_Detroit
After last week's hiatus, we put back on our prospecting caps and pan for gold in the great video vastness that is YouTube...
1. Grizzly Bear, "Knife (Accappella)"
We wanted to post Grizzly Bear's mezmerizing performance of "Knife" from their Friday appearance on Last Call with Carson Daly, but our search turned up zilch. So in its place we're posting this great alternate- a doo-woppy accappella performance of "Knife" in the streets of Paris.
2. Grinderman BBC interview
By now, you should know about Nick Cave's "mini-seeds", Grinderman. Nick and the Grinderdudes were recently interviewed for BBC's Culture Show by Zane Lowe (who doesn't really seem to get Cave). Find the interview below, where the band discusses the album and finding time to tour.
3. Sunset Rubdown, "Us Ones In Between (Live in Chicago, circa '06)"
Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug quietly released a record under the name Sunset Rubdown back in 2005. The project has turned into a fully formed band with the release of last year's excellent LP, Shut Up I Am Dreaming. Sunset Rubdown embark on a co-headlining tour with Xiu Xiu in April. Check out the live video below then score some tickets here.
4. Amy Winehouse, "Rehab (Live @ SXSW 2007)"
We had our fingers crossed that some SXSW footage of Brit-Soul Diva Amy Winehouse would pop up. And here it is! This clip is from Winehouse's acoustic performance at Levi's/Fader Magazine party. She wows an enthusiastic crowd with a stripped down version of her single "Rehab". No drunken antics, just pure scorch.
5. Kings of Leon, "On Call" video
We love the Followills, but this video for the first single from their forthcoming (and excellent) album, Because of the Times, is hella cheesy. Caleb hams to the camera every facial expression he can muster. But still, those pretty boy looks make this very watchable. Because of the Times is out April 3rd.

Apparently "No Pussy Blues" was not the first single. It was just an introduction. Grinderman's first single release will be "Get It On." If you didn't catch the news last month about Nick Cave's new super group, here's a refresher course. Nick Cave's Mini Seeds have added some new members, now consisting of Nick Cave, Martyn Casey (The Triffids), Warren Ellis (Dirty Three, The Bad Seeds) and Jim Sclavunous (The Cramps), and the band Grinderman was born and spent summer in the studio.
"Get it On" will be released as a limited run 7", with a 1000 copies made available February 8th, 2007. The cover artwork will be an original Nick Cave creation and, rather than a b-side on the flipside, there will be an original etching by Nick Cave (again). The song will also be released digitally.
You can preview the first official single from Grinderman's self-titled debut this Christmas on their MySpace page. The album proper will be released March 5th but the only scheduled show is the ATP appearance this spring. The band spoke about "Get It On" on its website:
"This song is sung across an excoriating mandolin loop based on an obscure lute melody from the 11th century," suggests Ellis.
"It is a lament for the messianic rock n.. roll hero," says the virile and youthful Cave, "and begins, of course, with a statement of intent."
"Mice, dogs, baboons, hyenas", says Marty, Zen-like in the corner.
"Yeah, well, for me all the enemies of inspiration assume animal shapes," explains Cave, "they are all around us...and of course, inside us."
"From all the loops I originally sent you, this was the first one that really cried out to be used," mumbles Ellis, from the black hole in his shovel-shaped beard.
"Yeah, it grinds...it ground..." growls Sclavunos.
These are manly men making a manly record so get ready. It's gonna be like those retreats where business men go into the forest to get in touch with their inner bear or wolf, paint their faces, and howl at the moon, while sober! It's gonna be awesome. Man Camp.

Nick Cave Back as Grinderman

Nick Cave is back without the Bad Seeds. Formerly running with the name The Mini Seeds, the band has grown into Grinderman and consists of Nick Cave, Martyn Casey (The Triffids), Warren Ellis (Dirty Three, The Bad Seeds) and Jim Sclavunous (The Cramps).
The band describe themselves as:
...Foul-mouthed, noisy, hairy, and damn well old enough to know better.
The band's debut comes with a release on March 5th, followed by performance at the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival in the UK this April. Of the recording, Casey told the NME:
Casey said: "It wasn't consciously two fingers to maturity but I remember thinking, all the way through, 'This isn't bad for a bunch of old farts.'"
Cave added: "We're just searching for a bit of freedom."
If their first single is the least bit autobiographical, for Nick freedom equals pussy, and he speaks for aging men who agree. "No Pussy Blues," now streaming at the Grinderman myspace site, chronicles an aging rock musician's frustrations with a younger lady's lack of interest. By the end, you really do feel bad for him. You think, come on lady, what's a guy gotta do? He's not hanging out with you because you guys have so much in common.
