'Christian Left' Launched

Liberal religious groups have joined forces under the name Christian Alliance for Progress to form an alternative to the right-wing groups that have recently dominated US politics.

"We can no longer stand by and watch people speak hatred, division, war and greed in the name of our faith," said Patrick Mrotek, the Alliance's founder.

The group aims to advocate a more progressive, tolerant set of views on issues that have recently been polarised by the fundamentalism of right-wing Christians.

"We are here because the language spoken by the religious right is Christian - this requires a uniquely Christian response," Mr Mrotek added.

In particular, the Alliance hopes to speak out on issues such as stem cell research and abortion.

"Many Americans, especially people of faith, are ready to hear from Christians who are tolerant, and who understand the many ways that our faiths impact our views of public life," it says on its website.

it's astonishing how such simple ideas tend to be reported as breakthroughs...I would think this is kind of an "Uh...duh?" sort of action...

I'm not religious in the slightest, but here's hoping it's a counterbalance to the idiocy we have going on now. Even given my aetheism, it's a movement I can see myself supporting. The religious right thought process disgusts me.

Oh thank god. Finally! if I was a Christian, I'd have started this group myself. Sadly I'm not, so I couldn't but, umm, you know what I mean. Good luck guys!

BBC story of the CO-OP Bank taking a stand against Christian fundaMENTALISTS.

The Co-operative Bank has asked an evangelical Christian group to close its account because of its anti-homosexual views.

The bank said the opinions of Christian Voice were incompatible with its support for diversity.

Christian Voice said the bank, based in Manchester, was discriminating against it on religious grounds.

Could it happen in America?

Would it happen in America?

You have to realize how hated most left-minded Christians feel in this country. Whenever issues such as same-sex marriage, stem cell research, and the war on terror come up, unless you support the far-right wing with every fiber of your being you get labeled as a communist, atheist, terror sympathizing son of a bitch. I'm glad peple have finally cried, "Enough!" and taken a stand.

This is a paradigmatic case of how weak "liberals" in the US have become: rather than develop their own strategies, ideas, and so on, they adopt those of the dominant party.

Um, hi, excuse me, history here, sorry to interrupt. Until about 30 years ago, the most dominant religious organizations in politics were liberal organizations.

If I understand you right, what you are suggesting is that the liberals should have created their own religion from scratch, instead of adopting Christianity?
