Administration Confirms Quran Abuse. What a Surprise!

The Pentagon confirmed five cases of Quran abuse by US personnel, including instances of soliders and interrogators stepping on and kicking the Muslim holy book.

The findings, released after normal business hours Friday evening, are among the results of an investigation last month by Brig. Gen. Jay Hood, the commander of the detention center in Cuba. The probe was triggered by a Newsweek magazine report -- later retracted -- that a U.S. soldier had flushed one Guantanamo Bay detainee's Quran down a toilet.

Perhaps to reduce the sting of the admissions, Hood also claimed some detainees had mistreated their own Qurans:

"These included using a Quran as a pillow, ripping pages out of the Quran, attempting to flush a Quran down the toilet and urinating on the Quran," Hood's report said. It offered no possible explanation for the detainees' motives.

so much for a big government/military cover-up. something happened, and it was investigated, and reported to the public. (sorry you government-shy conspiracy theorists) wink

the military isn't perfect, we have bad apples just like anyone else. sucks, but sadly it only takes a couple retards to make everyone else look bad.

Does Newsweek retract their retraction, then?

Unfortunate, but not terribly surprising. Worse things than this have been done in these places.

Truth is an absolute defense against libel, but not bad reportage.

You have got to be fucking joking. Leaving aside the incessant chorus of "Newsweek lied!" we've had to endure for weeks now, just how many fucking "isolated incidents" do you fuckers need before you figure out you're in the goddamn forest/?

There's no confirmation that a US soldier actually flushed a Quran down the toilet. The source himself has said he's "not sure the story is true." They can't re-instate that (and they would be smart not to embark on any sort of "I told you so" campaign, which I highly doubt they would anyway). There have been abuses, that particular abuse has just not been proven. This announcement will certainly be played down or ignored by Bush officially, but it does highlight how absurd he acted in raising hell about the story in the first place.

So, what exactly is "bad reportage" about a highly placed anonymous source who said "I have read a report that confirms this to be true." and lo and behold the report is finally and quietly released as soon as the furor dies down?

No, but there is confirmation that the Quran was kicked and stepped on during interrogations. There is also evidence that the Quran was bombed with water balloons and splashed with urine. Go figure. whatever

From the article:

In the most recent confirmed case Hood said a detainee complained on March 25, 2005, of urine splashing on him and his Quran. An unidentified guard admitted at the time that "he was at fault," the Hood report said, although it did not say whether the act was deliberate.

What, did the prisoner and his Quran accidentally crawl in front of the guard while he was relieving himself?

Oh, I am not arguing with the basic point that abuses occurred, and that the flushing incident probably did as well. I'm just suggesting that Newsweek probably won't jump on a high horse of vindication, considering the publicity it received over the story originally. Even though this certainly mitigates their situation, I'm guessing they're going to be keeping a fairly low profile for a while.
