House Votes to End Stem Cell Limits

TUESDAY MAY 24 2005 5:35 PM

Submitted by Argene. Edited By Christopher.

The House has voted 238-194 to lift limits on embryonic stem cell research. The vote came admid the never ending morality tug-of-war on the issue between conservative, pro-life represenatives and their more liberal oponents.

Supporters of the measure said many of the embryos that would be studied would be discarded otherwise rather than implanted in the wombs of surrogate mothers. The moral obligation, they argued, rested on Congress to fund research that could lead to cures for diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Both President George Bush and House Leader Tim Delay want to block the measure.

Says Bush:

"This bill would take us across a critical ethical line by creating new incentives for the ongoing destruction of emerging human life. Crossing this line would be a great mistake."

DeLay's remarks on the issue were similar, saying that "the bill would force taxpayers to finance "the dismemberment of living, distinct human beings."

Proponents of the bill have more to fear from President Bush, since, even though the bill passed in the House, it does not have enough votes to overturn the veto George Bush has stated he will give the bill. DeLay's strength seems weakened both within and outside of the House due to the fact that he is under Federal criminal investigation, and therefore is less of a threat to pro-bill representatives.

Bush has yet to exercise a veto, if I'm not mistaken?

So this will be the first one? Good. Keep pandering to the religious fundamentalists. Please.

You're either for expanding stem cell research or you're against Christopher Reeve.

It got your panties in a bunch, for one. Second, De Lay articulated a clear principle for opposing stem cells: that tax payers shouldn't be forced to have their tax dollars used for the "dismemberment of living, distinct human beings." What I did was not compare apples to oranges, but to take a principle that was asserted by De Lay and apply it directly to a different issue. If De Lay's principle is true in the case of stem cells, it is also true in the case of Iraq.
