No Politics for You, Canada

When Paul Martin's minority government was elected, all parties thought a lot would get be accomplished.

The hope was that in order for big bills (read: budgets) to be passed, major compromises and increased spending would appease the majority of parliamentarians to the benefit of Canadians.

That optimism has gone out the window as the government hangs on the brink of collapse and policy-making has ground to a halt.

Canada's minority Liberal government, under heavy pressure over a corruption scandal, looks set to lose a confidence vote next week, government and opposition officials said on Friday.

Prime Minister Paul Martin has proposed Parliament vote on his budget next Thursday and says he will call an election if he loses.

The main opposition Conservative Party wants the vote immediately but indications are that whenever it is held, the Liberals have a poor chance of surviving, even though the vote will be close.

Conservatives have refused to attend committee meetings until the vote is held. Furthermore, Harper has called Martin's timing exploitative of a Conservative MPs illness. It is, after all, about numbers. The Conservative MP in question suffers from cancer and is due for an operation on Wednesday - and would miss the vote on Thursday.

Despite policy-making having been stalled, politics is in full force. From references to the Klu Klux Klan to the Holocaust, both Liberals and Conservatives alike have been slinging the mud.

Minority governments have such potential - it is from minority governments that universal heath care for Canadians was forged. Instead the Bloc Québequois and Conservative Parties alike seek to utilize the situation to gain seats instead of utilizing the Government minority numbers to press for policies that benefit Canadians.

I'm more then warey of what can possible happen in this next little bit, and but more so scared of the idea of that idiot Harper being in charge of Canada.

It's more of a thing of the lesser of two evils.

Going to be a interesting ride, that's for sure.

I was hoping more of the minority government too, lbut i cant say the present situation really surprise me, in fact i was expecting it way sooner with the the works of the Gomery commision.

anyway, the next government will probably be in minority too....another shitload of tax money going in elections that could be avoided.

Thats about how I feel. Harper is fucking scary. He's like a Canadian Tom Delay, (or take your pick of rigid, religious US politician bigots). If he gets in, we can kiss Canada's reputation as a country of tolerance and open-mindedness good bye. Gay marriage? Nope. Medicinal pot? Buh bye. Martins government may have had corruption (like what government doesnt?) and he may be a bit of an ass, but at least he's not Harper.
Of course, it could partly be his local elected fuckwit minion . I never thought there was so much homophobia, sexism and racism in this part of the country till this guy got elected. He's brought all the bible-thumpers out of the woodwork..
Sigh.. end rant.

i wish the conservatives would just go away. if they spent less time digging up dirt and saying black is white just because it contradicst the liberals, things would get done.

and now they want to force an election within about a year of the last one? wow, i'm glad they're willing to spend my tax dollars so frivolously. don't their supporters realize that an election costs a LOT of money?

the most disgusting thing is, if an election is called, it will still be a minority government, and if the conservatives win, they'll really have no more power than they do now.

if an election is called, lets get rid of the retards and vote ndp.

I will give $1000 to the leader of any national party who will begin the next English-language election debate with

"Before we begin, I'd like to make it clear to Mr. Harper that none of the moderator's questions may be construed as a confidence motion."

Actually, can I give a party leader $1000? I may have just broken our election laws....

If you told me the chances were even
The prime minister's name could be Stephen
I'd fold up my flag
And pack up my bags
And tell all my friends that I'm leavin'.

Let's face it. The Conservative Party is as much a regional party as the Bloc Quebecois, it being dominated by former members of the defunct West-centric Reform Party. They don't want to pass bills that will benefit all Canadians. They want total power so that they can pass bills that will benefit their core constituency.

Harper and Duceppe sicken me as much as Martin.

The funny thing is that a win for Harper is a win for the Bloc, as my separatist ex-gf told me. The country will have an anti-Quebec PM, which will give the separatist movement that kind of push it has needed. The Bloc can also argue to the Quebecois that the Canadian federal system is dysfunctional with the election of Harper and now is the time to push for secession from the federation.

which is what Harper doesn't see, and probably what Ducept (sp?) actually does.

I'm hoping for either a NDP or Liberal win.. if the Liberal party can stay in for the rest of their term, things will settle and we should make it out fine. If the NDP come in, we'll still avoid losing Quebec.

If Harper does get in, say hello to some shitty treatment of tons of things (gay marriages have already been mentioned, but probably also immigration/minority treatments as well will go down the tubes).

Plus losing a province, will make this country look like more of a joke to the rest of the world, and who know how long quebec would stay on it's own feet, before being owned by someone else.

Ugh, this entire thing stinks... Harper doesn't give a damn about Canada, he just wants power... and as bad as the Gomery inquiry is, you have to realize that more involved are just trying to save their own skin.
