Nuclear Sub crashes into a mountain

A US nuclear submarine was severely damaged and one sailor died after crashing into a mountain in the Pacific. That's right, a mountain.

The submarine hit a mountain while submerged 157m (525 feet) below the ocean's surface. The mountain did not appear on the chart being used for navigation.

The sub is powered by a nuclear reactor, so as a general policy its better for them to avoid mountains. Luckily, the reactor was not damaged. The navy blamed the crew for the accident, as they did have other maps showing "a navigation hazard" in the area but did not transfer the information the the map in use.

that would have to suck being the guy that didn't draw the "navigation hazard" on the in-use map. he knows his blame!

don't they have sonar and things to detect large dangerous objects...such as rock?

I don't know if subs generally rock their sonar in every direction all the time.

I'm not 100% sure on this because I don't know a whole lot about the silent service, but sonar isn't in use at all times. Especially if a sub is running manuvers or is running silent, by pinging sonar gives away your location pretty easily.

Active Sonar works by high frequency echolocation, that is you fire off a burst of sound and wait to see how long it takes for the echo to reach you and from what direction. This process is very precise and accurate but it has a major drawback for a Hunter-Killer submarine in that it gives away your location every time you use it. As a result although most ( if not all) submarines have them, they are rarely switched on. Passive Sonar works by using accoustically isolated ultra sensitive microphones and sophisticated computers to pick up the vibrations in the water resulting from any sort of movement.
Unfortunately mountains as a rule do not move so they are very hard to detect in this manner.
I hope that explains things

This happened almost 2 months ago, and it's a lot easier to run into underwater mountains than you might think. There's a lot of controversy over whether or not the crew was responsible for the accident because the mountain wasn't on any of the (really old) charts that the boat had at the time although it showed up in recent GPS satellite images. Also, more than half the crew was severely injured.

Did this make major american news when it happened at all? I read about it in some military papers, but it's just now on the BBC? That's crazy.

Here's what I'm guessing happened...

Press: "So, what happened with that sub?"
Navy: "What sub?"
Press: "You know, the one that ran into the mountain."
Navy: "I don't know what you're talking about."
Press: "The one that it says right here in the military papers 'ran into a freakin mountain'."
Navy: "I'm sorry I'm not aware of any such incident."
Press: "But that quote is attributed to you."
Navy: "No it isn't."
Press: surreal
Navy: "Right, so...next question?"
Press: "How'd that sub hit a mountain?"
Navy: mad
Press: eeek

(please note: I don't actually think this is what happened...I think there were more smilies involved. Probably including this one: ARRR!!! )

I follow the news pretty closely, and I never heard about this.
